Obituary: Sophie Brooks Nov 22, 1918 – Mar 12, 2015 Sophie C. (Rakowski) Brooks, passed away peacefully on 12, 2015 at The Sanctuary at St. Pauls where she had been a resident since 2010. Sophie was born on 22, 1918 to Alexander and Josephine (Werwas) Rakowski in South Bend. She was the 9th of their ten children. In addition to her parents, preceding her in death were her siblings Regina (Joseph) Janiszczak, Stanley (Sophie), Eugene (Mary), Walter Hank, Stephanie (Walter) Lukaszewski, Alice Thomas, Joseph (Marie), John (Alice), and Bernadette Bernie. She married Edwin A. Brooks on May 10, 1947. Edwin preceded her in death on 17, 1984. She is survived by her children Jeanine (Dean) Szabo of South Bend, Edwin (Susan) Brooks of The Woodlands, TX, Patricia Brooks of Fishers, IN and Ann Marie (Stephen) Beatty of Indianapolis, IN, her grandsons Jonathan (Monica) Szabo of Dallas, TX and David (Amy) Szabo of Austin, TX and step-granddaughter Kelsey (Christopher) Everling of Bloomington, IN. the death of her last sibling, Bernie, she became the Matriarch of the Rakowski Family, leaving behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. Sophies father passed away when she was only 13 years old. When she graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1935, she went to work for the St. Joseph Auditors office and helped support her mother and younger sister. She also helped her brother Hank who for many years ran the coffee shop in the Courthouse along with their sister Bernie. Sophie and Ed married in South Bend, they moved to Chicago for a few years but after their children Jeanine and Ed were born they moved back to South Bend. Sophie worked in food service at Washington High School for many years before retiring in 1980. Always good with numbers, she was still able to do math in her head at age 93! Sophie and Ed were members of Holy Family Catholic Church since 1951, and she was very active in the Altar & Rosary Sodality and also was a regular volunteer at many parish events working bingo and the parish summer festival until her most recent years. Sophie was an Honorary member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and belonged to the St. Adalberts Harvest House, the Holy Cross Harvest House, St. John the Baptist Retirees Club, St. Hedwigs Golden Cluster and the St. Stanislaus Harvest House, actively attending the meetings while she was still physically able. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching Notre Dame football and IU basketball as well as the Chicago Cubs and Bears. She even learned to enjoy watching golf on television. Having learned to cook and bake from her mother, Sophie was an excellent cook but was especially known for her coffee cakes, pies, cookies and other desserts. She was proud to say that the desserts she brought to Holy Family bingo nights were often the first to sell out! Her children have inherited her love of chocolate. Empty candy wrappers could often be found under her favorite chair or piled on her side table. Known as Aunt Zos to her nieces and nephews or Zosia to her siblings and old friends, she was very proud of her Polish heritage. She and her daughter Patti traveled to Poland and Italy in 2003 as part of a tour group with people of Polish descent. visited Warsaw, Krakow and Czestochowa, Poland but were most excited to be at St. Peters Square to see Pope John Paul II during his weekly audience and to tour the Vatican. Her family is comforted in knowing that the love of her life, her beloved husband Ed, has wrapped her in his arms once again. The minute she laid eyes on him at a family members wedding she knew he was the man she would marry. had 37 wonderful, but too short, years together. As a couple they spent many weekend evenings playing pinochle with good friends, or dancing at family weddings or at the Moose Lodge. In the last few years of their life together they took many trips by car or bus traveling the country enjoying their time together after they retired. Sophies 96 years on earth were filled with joy and love of her family, friends and her faith. She loved and was loved beyond measure. We will all miss her forever but know that she is now in Heaven with her husband and other family and friends looking down on us from above. The family wishes to express their sincerest and deepest gratitude to the nurses, aides and entire staff at Sanctuary at St. Pauls for their loving care of Sophie these past 4 1/2 years. Visitation will be from 1 to 5pm on at Kaniewski , 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 2pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am at Holy Family Church, 56405 Mayflower Rd, South Bend. Visitation will also be held at the church for one hour prior to the Mass. Entombment will follow at the St. Joseph . Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Church. |

Obituary: Robert E. Brooks, age 88, of Tofte, Minnesota formerly of Hammond, Indiana passed away peacefully at his residence with his loving family at his side. Bob was born 26, 1928 in Springfield, Ohio to the late Paul and Cora Brooks. Also preceding him in death his sister Mildred. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife Bernadette (Bassett) Brooks; children, Bill (Barb) Miller, Mary Miller, Bobbie (Joe) Clark, Bob (Stacy) Brooks, Tim (Kim) Brooks, and Kim Brooks; step-children, Floyd (Linda) Bassett, Catherine Bassett, Dawn (Larry) Lopez, Patricia Pitrowski, Elizabeth (Larry) Martinez, Bernadette (Greg) Grisham; 38 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren. Bob honorably served in the United States Army during Korean Conflict. He was a master craftsman and wood refinisher for L. Fish Furniture in Hammond. retirement he and his wife relocated to Minnesota on Lake Superior. He and his wife enjoyed wildlife rehabilitation out their home, healing and nursing wildlife animals to set back into the wild. He was a loving father and grandfather, and was known as "Papa Smurf" to many. Visitation will be , 17, 2017 from 10:00 am until the time of his funeral at 12:00 noon at Chapel Lawn (8178 S.
