Obituary: The Reverend Canon Herbert J. Beadle, Jr., died on 16, 2010, after a long battle with cardiovascular disease. He was 86. Canon Beadle is survived by his wife Frances Salisbury McDowell, and from his first marriage, daughter Virginia Beadle McEwen (Ginny) of Charlotte, N.C., and sons Herbert J. Beadle III (Jay/Bert), and William Frank Beadle (Bill) of Atlanta. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will take place on , 17, at 2:00 PM at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Philip in Buckhead. The service will be officiated by The Right Reverend J. Neil Alexander, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta. Herb Beadle had been an Episcopal priest for nearly 60 years. His keen mind, vibrant personality, and love of life led him to a very interesting and eclectic career. Born in New Haven, CT, and reared in the small West Texas border town of Del Rio, he grew up with colorful characters and, rightfully, became one himself. His mother, a professional violinist and the only woman in Del Rio to take afternoon walks wearing English riding boots and jodhpurs, started him on violin at age 3. By 17 Herb played beautifully enough to be invited by his teacher, a professor at the University of Texas in Austin, to play for the professors friend Jascha Heifetz. The world-famous virtuoso reportedly told Herb he had career potential, but the young mans passion was for jazz! He played clarinet and saxophone in the teenage band he had founded - Herbie Beadle and the Fish Fry Five. He had also become an Eagle Scout. Herbs love of scouting would stick with him. Thirty-odd years later as Chaplain of Atlantas The Lovett School, he and faculty member Jay Dickerson would take groups of teenagers camping, canoeing, and portaging in the Quetico, a wild and beautiful lake district in Canada. Untouched by civilization and much of it accessible only by seaplane, the Quetico apparently birthed some uproarious adventures. The aspiring jazz composer spent his first two years of college majoring in music theory and composition, but left college to enlist in the army after the outbreak of World War II. Lieutenant Beadle became a medical supply officer at Camp Pendleton, CA. His duties included escorting wounded soldiers from their evacuation flights to the hospital. Though not on a battlefield himself, Herb was forever changed by the experience. The sight of brutal injury and its dehumanizing consequences turned him to pacifism, and from music to ministry. the war, he graduated from the University of Texas and headed to General Theological Seminary in New York City. He was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1951. Rev. Beadle served as rector at churches in Conroe, Brenham, and Houston, TX, while also training and volunteering as a hospital chaplain. Never one to miss out on adventure, he earned a pilots license, bought a small plane, and flew all over sparsely populated areas to serve several small Episcopal missions. Some of his most fervent praying was reportedly done while flying without radar through a west Texas dust storm. Herb became active in the Civil Rights Movement in its early days when such a commitment could not only get a white suburban clergyman fired, it could get him killed. All who knew him can imagine his reaction to being rousted out of bed at 3 AM by lay leaders of his parish who accused him of being a Communist. all, they had seen his name on a list - compiled by the Conroe Garden Club! He took more seriously the large rock that whizzed within an inch of his head as he walked with the many other protestors who followed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, AL. For decades to come his ministry would be characterized by refusal to back down from a heartfelt conviction, no matter how unpopular it might be. But the Texas years were not all work and no play. Herb hosted a musical radio show, Father Beadles Potpourri, the name of which he later described as pretentious and chosen to show off his rich baritone voice. He became a ham-radio operator and began a 30-year career as a reserve officer in the U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps, attaining Commander rank in 1967. The Beadle family moved to Atlanta in 1966 where Herb became the director of St. Judes House, an alcohol and drug-addiction treatment center. Despite the challenges and seriousness of his work, there has never been an enterprise in which Herb Beadle could not find something to laugh about! Such as the night he was called to St. Judes at 2:00 AM and was arrested for operating a dive. (A few residents were playing poker; the loser got mad and called the police.) His priests collar and dignified white hair saved the day - along with an entreaty from a rumpled Matlock look-alike. During part of his 16-year tenure at St. Judes, Herb enjoyed being a staff singer and baritone soloist at All Saints Episcopal Church. He became an avid member of the Atlanta Ham Radio Club, speaking with friends all over the world. He eventually earned the highest level operators license, which qualified him to become an examiner. He was given the call sign N4MNR, which friends dubbed Mighty Naughty Reverend. It was also during this time that he obtained a CB radio for his car; his handle was Preacher Man. ev. Beadle became Canon Pastor at St. Philip Cathedral in 1983, later serving as Canon for Worship, until his retirement in 1988. He served for a year as interim vicar at Emmaus House following the retirement of Father Austin Ford, and remained a popular supply priest until he developed visual problems. We will never know if Glenn Miller or Count Basie lost a rival through Herbs choice of ministry, but his artistry and flair for drama served him well in all that he did. It made him an continued... |

Obituary: Theres a reason Rutledge Beacham spent nearly four decades with Carter, a commercial real estate firm. Rutledge Mayo Beacham died at Emory University Hospital from complications of a surgery. He was 64. Employer and employee shared similar values, said Holly H. Hughes, executive vice president for the Atlanta companys property and facility management group. Trustworthiness. Sincerity. Ethics. "Rutledge was a man of his word," she said. "He would always do the right thing, even if it was the harder thing to do, and even if it didn help him as much as an alternative would. He was so loyal to Carter, and so committed to Carter. The real connection was that Carters values and Rutledges values were one of the same." At Carter, Mr. Beacham worked as a vice president in the property and facility management group. He donned several hats. He was a liaison to many clients, including J.P. Morgan and Georgia Power. Moreover, he was responsible for the firms "on-site teams" that handle day-to-day operations. "What was unusual was that he would really stop and take the time and focus on other people," Mrs. Hughes said. "He related to people at all levels, and interacted with, encouraged and motivated each to be the best." On , Rutledge Mayo Beacham of Atlanta died at Emory University Hospital from complications of a surgery. He was 64. A memorial will be held at 3 p.m. at Dunwoody Community Church. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at H.M. Patterson & Son, Oglethorpe Hill. Mr. Beacham was an Atlanta native, born at Emory University Hospital. He graduated from Willingham High in Macon and earned a 1968 bachelors degree in accounting from Georgia State University. Five years later, he married Eda Hanes, his wife of 36 years. "It was a really sweet relationship even before we got married," she said. "Every woman should have a husband like him." Initially, the Eagle Scout and avid traveler went into the accounting business, but in 1971 turned to commercial real estate. Six years later, he joined Carter, a career in which some say he became the face of the company. Among other duties, he oversaw 2.7 million square feet of office, industrial and retail properties, according to his resume. Beacham belonged to the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA). He served as the 1998 president of BOMA Atlanta, and as a southern region president in 2005 and 2006. He received the associations 2003 Huey Award for career service. Henry Chamberlain, president and chief executive officer of Washington-based BOMA International last saw Mr. Beacham at a conference in . "He was hitting the Hill and having a good time," he said. "Hes been involved in the BOMA southern region for decades, involved in all major issues. You always wanted to see him in the room." As a couple, the Beachams have traveled the world. One of his favorite trips was a vacation in Greece. "It would be at the top of the list," his wife said, "but he had as much fun planning the trips as going." Survivors other than his wife include two sons, Jeff Beacham of Sun Valley, Idaho and Todd Beacham of Boulder, Colo.; and a brother, Scott Beacham of Winter Haven, Fla |
