Obituary: JoAnn Andersen, longtime resident of Florida, passed away , 2nd, 2014 of natural causes, she was 80 years old. JoAnn was born in Ohio on 17th, 1934 to the late Pauline Faulkner and LeRoy Bud Smith. From Ohio she relocated to Michigan to find superior employment in order to better care for her children. While in Michigan she met her last husband of 26 years, the late Milton Van Andersen. The couple left Michigan with their youngest daughter and moved to Marco Island, Florida due to her husbands health concerns. She resided on Marco Island for 25 years until she moved to Fort Myers to live with her daughter. JoAnn passed away at home peacefully in her sleep with her youngest daughter Stacy by her side. JoAnn lived a diverse, rich and fulfilling life ranging from wife and mother to owner of several businesses and realtor to excelling at both tennis and golf. It can be said that she not only lived life, she celebrated life to its fullest, right to the very end. As a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, JoAnn certainly put her family above all else. Everything she did, whether her husband or kids liked it or not, was for the betterment, care and love of her family. JoAnn was loving, compassionate, attentive and dedicated to her husband and children. Milton Van Andersen (JoAnns last husband and her Prince Charming) was a stubborn, demanding, meticulous, strong willed and an its my way or the highway kind of man. I mention this only so you can imagine what JoAnn had to do to make him happy for their 26 years together. However, I don want you to think that she cowered down to him and only did as he said, no, no, you would be absolutely incorrect in thinking that. She was the only one that could tame the Loin that was Milton Van Andersen. In all my time on this earth the only person I ever saw that got away with talking back to him was her. It was a love affair made in heaven that was cut short when Milton passed away in 1988. JoAnns children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the jewels in her life. She could not do enough for her children. When she became too ill to travel, she learned how to Skype on the computer so she could remain a part of her great grandchildren, Mila and Zoeys, lives. Now, she absolutely was not a push over when it came to her children. were expected to be well behaved and mannered, to always listen to mom and dad, do well in school, never quit and don do anything stupid. Because when you did something stupid, JoAnn had a sixth sense and she always found out about it and you did not want to experience one of JoAnn Andersens deserved reprimands. However, I secretly think that those reprimands hurt her more than they hurt the child that was receiving it. Lastly, while she had her own proud moments for her own accomplishments, some of her proudest days were when one of her children realized a long term goal that they had been striving for. The majority of people who met JoAnn realized instantly that she was a genuine person. Rare these days but she was one. Her empathy, fairness, decorum and understanding towards others were to be admired and were what made her an extraordinary business woman with abundant business awards that demonstrated these talents. JoAnn came out on top at anything she put her mind to. Putting her heart and soul into everything she did. Examples include playing tennis and golf. She excelled at tennis becoming one of the top women players in all the leagues she participated in. Regarding golf, in the short span of one year she went from not knowing how to swing a club to becoming a 3 handicap (for those of us not well versed in golf terms, thats damn good). So good in fact that her country club asked her to join their womens team which traveled around both near and far to compete against other country clubs. She unfortunately had to decline this wonderful opportunity because of family obligations. However, she did not leave golf without first accomplishing that which many strive for but very few achieve….a hole in one! JoAnns wishes were to be cremated and laid to rest in the Gulf of Mexico with her husband, the late Milton Van Andersen. Jo Anns cremains will be mixed with cement and formed into a reef ball. This reef ball will be placed, along with other reef balls, on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico creating a large artificial reef. Very shortly this reef will be populated by various and numerous marine organisms both large and small. JoAnn expressed that she liked the idea of new life being created from her passing. JoAnn was dearly loved and will be fondly remembered by her surviving family members including her children Debra, Barry, JR and Stacy; her grandchildren Bridget, James, Leighanna, Ryan and Heather (deceased); her great grandchildren Frankie, Anthony, Mila and Zoey and brothers, Roy and Marshall Smith.
