Obituary: Martha Appelin left us to be with our Lord and reunite with her husband Carl of more than 50 years on , 14, 2017. She was 95. Born in Tucson, Arizona on 26, 1921, Martha Louise Sewell was the second of six children born to parents Irene Emily (Bruss) Sewell and Hope Watts Sewell. She grew up in Tucson and graduated from Tucson High School and the nursing academy at St. Marys Hospital. completing her nurses training, Martha joined the U.S. Navy Officers Corps during World War II and served her country in northern California. On completion of her naval duty, she returned to Tucson, where she worked in a doctors office. She met Carl Waldemar Appelin of McNeal Arizona at a church bowling party in early 1948. The couple married just six months later, on 14, 1948. celebrated 50 years of marriage in Grand Junction in 1998, only four months before Carl passed away. Martha and Carl were blessed with three children: Carl Jr., Irene and Barbara. When Carl and Irene were babies, the family lived in a remote mining camp in the Lukachukai Mountains of northeastern Arizona. moved to Grand Junction, Colorado in 1954 and shortly thereafter, Barbara was born. Except for one year living again in Arizona, Martha would spend of the rest of her life in Grand Junction. When her children were of school age, she returned to her nursing, joining St. Marys Hospital in Grand Junction in 1963 where she worked in several capacities but primarily with oncology and medical patients on what they then called Two-East. She retired from St. Marys in 1984. The Church and her family were the most important things in Marthas life; and ice cream and chocolate of course, she loved ice cream and chocolate. As a child, she attended Grace Lutheran Church in Tucson, where she was confirmed and later where she and Carl were married. With the move to Grand Junction, the Appelin family joined the Lutheran Church of Messiah, where Martha was in regular attendance for over sixty years. retiring from St. Marys, Martha spent much of her time being the best Grandma ever. She spent countless hours caring for her grandchildren and attending their school and sports events, regardless of whether they lived close by. She was at her happiest when all of us would go to church with her, but she hated standing up to introduce someone; that was Carls job. She rarely missed a . Martha is survived by her three children and six grandchildren: Carl Appelin and his wife Melonie of Las Vegas NV and his children Eric Appelin and his wife Jennifer (Monterey CA) and Traci Appelin and her fiancé Matt Clapp (Grand Junction/Palisade); Irene Jessen and her husband Gary of Grand Junction and their sons Max Jessen (Denver CO) and Sam Jessen (Grand Junction); and Barbara Filas and her husband Frank of Alma CO and their sons Benjamen Filas and his wife Suzanne (St. Louis MO) and Harrison Filas and his girlfriend Alyse Brennecke (Littleton CO). She is also survived by her sister Irene Frerking of Summerfield KS, with whom she shared a special bond. Always practical and never self-serving, Martha did not want any tributes or eulogies on her passing; she simply asked that everyone go to church with her one last time and that her favorite hymns and bible verses form the basis for the service. That special service in Marthas honor will be held at Lutheran Church of Messiah, 840 N. 11th Street, Grand Junction, on , 25, 2017 at 10AM. Immediately following, she will be laid to rest next to Carl in Memorial Gardens in Grand Junction.
