He served his country for 22 years in the U.S. Air Force, including assignments in Taiwan, Germany, and Turkey, and met Martha when they worked at Gunter Air Force Station in the late 1950s, married her in 1960, raised two daughters with her, and retired to Montgomery in 1980, where he earned a college degree and joined the U.S. Civil Service. Obituary: AKERS, Jimmy Wayne, 66, a resident of Prattville, AL, passed away on , 17, 2010. He loved the water and was an avid fisherman, as well as a member of the Pine Level Bass Club. He retired after forty years of service with International Paper of Selma, AL. He had a passion for coaching youth in sports, and until his health no longer allowed him, he was an active volunteer with the City of Prattville Girls Softball League, as well as the Prattville YMCA Youth Teams. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Helen Akers; and a sister, Sherry Akers. He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanette R. Akers: daughter, LaJuana Akers Roberts; son and daughter-in-law, James Wade and Roxanne Akers, all of Prattville, AL; sister, Debra Sue Belcher, Selma, AL; four grandchildren, of whom he was their number one fan, Chasi Roberts, Clint Roberts, Marissa Akers, Lakelyn Akers. Obituary: Jerry Walter (JW) Akers, age 78, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away , 22, 2017. He was born in ville, Tennessee and was one of three children.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Francis Akers. His surviving sister is Jean Strickland of Florence, AL. From the earliest age, Jerry had big ideas and aspirations for his life. growing up in Hohenwald, Tennessee and Florence, Alabama, Jerry joined the United States Air Force at the
age of 17 and served several years at home and abroad, including as a medical technician in the Korean War.
Upon leaving the Air Force, Jerry began his private career as a hospital medical technician. He then began his life-long passion in medical sales as a pharmaceutical rep with Winthrop Laboratories, Sorenson, and Gould, Inc.
In 1981, Jerry left the corporate world and founded his own medical supply and service business, SEMA Medical, Inc. For 25 years, Jerry, along with help from his family and employees, grew SEMA Medical from meager beginnings to a highly successful medical business known throughout the southeast region at the time of his retirement in 2004. Under Jerry's leadership and vision, SEMA was best known for developing first-of-their kind, custom perfusion packs used in open-heart bypass surgery procedures, and for providing unsurpassed service for valued customers. Jerry Akers is succeeded in life by his two daughters, Jodi and Cheri, and their husbands, Todd and Tracy of Birmingham. Also, by his son, Joe, and his wife Cindy of Minneapolis, MN; Grandchildren Laren Skaggs of Atlanta, Will Skaggs of Birmingham, Mary Katherine Leos and Sarah Leos of Birmingham, and Sam and Natalie Akers of Minneapolis. Services will be held , 27, 2017 beginning with visitation at 9:30 AM in the chapel at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church, followed by a Service at 10:30 AM in the chapel with Dr. Kip McClurg presiding. Burial with military honors will follow at the Alabama National in Montevallo at 12:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in honor of Jerry W. Akers.

He was a member of the Montgomery Country Club, The Red Elephant Club, Tide Pride and TarValon.net (Gaidin of Val Cueran). The son of the late Judge George Stoney Martele Akers, II and Mary Cowles Akers, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Sylvia Sam Akers. He is survived by his wife, Lori Akers; three children, Miranda Worsham, Sean Duncan (Shannon) and Chris Duncan (Erica); six grandchildren, Katelyn, Tyler James (TJ), Kyle, Connor, Chris, Shane and Maddie.

Visitation will be held at Alabama Heritage on , 16, 2015 from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., followed by a graveside service in Alabama Heritage with Reverend Cherie Meadows.
