Obituary: Former Dallas Mayor Austin Starke Taylor, Jr. passed away on 27, 2014, surrounded by his family in Dallas, Texas. He was 92. Starke Taylor was elected Mayor of Dallas on 2, 1983 and re-elected to office on 6, 1985. Mayor Taylor provided important leadership for Dallas during a critical period in the citys history. In the four years he served as mayor, Taylor worked hard for the adoption of a comprehensive land use plan, the revitalization of South Dallas and launching the Dallas Area Rapid Transit. He initiated the widening of North Central Expressway, better public housing, better quality health-care for low-income residents, and a resolution of the lead-emission problems of West Dallas. He also played a significant role in the 1985 passage of the largest bond program in the history of the city-$428 million worth of projects that included the completion of the Arts District, the Dallas Zoo, and the Dallas Arboretum. Taylors goals and accomplishments during his two terms in office surprised and silenced some of his strongest critics, The Dallas Morning News reported as Mayor Taylor completed his final term. He set forth on a course that addressed many of the serious urban problems that now grip Dallas. And in doing so, Taylor involved talented people from all economic levels and walks of life in the battle to make this city better. Before becoming Mayor, Starke served as President on the Parks and Recreation Board from 1977-1982. his second term as mayor, Starke took his post as CEO, Taylor Investments where he served on numerous boards including the AT&T Cotton Bowl Board as well as serving as the president of the Cotton Council International. He was also the past CEO and Director of the Dallas Cotton Shippers Association. In fact, Starke traveled with his family business all over the world for the cotton industry, serving as an ambassador for the United States primarily in Asia. Born in Paris, Texas on 2nd, 1922 to Austin Starke Taylor, Sr. and Veryl Georgette Lamb Taylor, he was two months-old when his parents moved to Dallas. Intrepid and bright, Starke grew into a helpful young man, both concerned and fascinated by the world around him. He spent his free time working as an apprentice in his familys Cotton business, starting at age 13. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1939. Drawn at an early age to serving his community, Starke was president of his 1943 Rice University graduating class where he was also editor of the year book and president of the Golf team. In 1942, Starke married Deloris Burris. Upon graduating from Rice University, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and was sent to officer training at Columbia University. ward his ship, the USS Celeno, spent 28 months carrying 2,500 troops for the invasions of Guam, Saipan, Ulithe, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant in 1946. the war, Starke joined his fathers cotton firm, Starke Taylor and Son. In 1951, he became President and sole owner until he sold the company in 1982. In 1973, Starke met Carolyn Wray Norman Markle at Presbyterian Hospital. She was his nurse and he was her patient. fell in love. were married on 7th of that year. spent 41 beautiful years together. both always said they were the loves of each others lives. Starke believed in giving back, and he worked his entire life to do just that-most notably as the Mayor of Dallas, but also in everyday ways like helping friends, family members, and strangers alike. He believed in helping people individually. Whether they needed better living conditions or needed more education to support their families, he showed up for the people in his life, and was always there to offer a kind hand and word of support. He lived by his strong Christian principles and faith. He believed in the goodness of people and in his own ability and responsibility to help others. He was one of the two founders of the Austin Street Shelter where he also started the annual Austin Street Shelter Golf Tournament that is still going on to benefit the Genesis Womens Shelter today. He served on the Boards of the Police Athletic League, Goodwill Industries, the Kidney Foundation of Texas, Dallas Community Chest Trust Fund, and the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom at Howard Payne in Brownwood, Texas, and the DFW Airport Board. He served as an Honorary Trustee for Southwestern Medical Foundation, and many more. He was a member of Lovers Lane Methodist Church, Preston Trail Golf Club, Dallas Country Club, Bent Tree Country Club, Eldorado Country Club of Indian Wells, California, Little Sandy Hunting and Fishing Club and the Dallas Assembly. Starke lived a big life, mainly because he was a man with a big heart. That big heart will be profoundly missed by all those who knew and loved him. Starke was preceded in death by his parents, A. Starke Taylor Sr. and Veryl Lamb Taylor, daughter Janet Taylor Patterson, step-son Wesley Markle, and grandson, Wesley Salley.
