Obituary: ÂChip Atkins, Jr., 74, founder and chairman emeritus of Atkins/Lord+Lasker, San AntonioÂs oldest advertising firm, passed away , 28, 2001 after a private and courageous battle with cancer. Born 13, 1927, he epitomized the lifestyle of Âself-made manÂ, driven by his passionate pursuits of family, collie dogs, advertising and travel. Chip or ÂMr. AÂ, as so many people knew him graduated from Brackenridge High School and studied at Tarleton State before serving in the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. That prompted him to further his engineering studies at Texas A&M University. He then discovered his interest in advertising and media, launching a nearly 50-year career in multiple areas of that industry, always remaining based in San Antonio. He founded Atkins in 1963, and over the next four decades, grew the firm into one of the most respected advertising agencies in the Southwest. He also acquired and grew two radio broadcasting groups over the years: S.S.S. Broadcasting, which operated AM and FM stations in San Antonio; and Forum Broadcasting, a continuing operation of successful AM and FM stations in Del Rio, Texas. His work in advertising was recognized many times locally, regionally and nationally, but his overall contribution to the industry was celebrated in 2000 when the American Advertising Federation presented him with the 2000 Silver Medal Award, its highest honor. ChipÂs overall business acumen and dedication to community was recognized in 1994 when Ernst & Young LLP honored him as ÂSocially Responsible Entrepreneur of the YearÂ. He served this community through many organizations, including the Alamo Kiwanis Club, the San Antonio Executives Association, the MayorÂs Business Advisory Board, and as chairman of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of CommerceÂs Task Force for Water Needs, among many other memberships and contributions. That same depth of involvement was reflected in his love of dogs, especially the collie breed. He acquired his first collie at age 14 and became recognized nationally as an extraordinary promoter of the breed through the development of his Lode-Ark Kennels. Chip served as president of the San Antonio Collie Club, president of the Collie Club of America and was a renowned judge for shows and competitions around the globe. His love of collies brought him and his wife, Pat Flaherty Atkins together years before they eventually married in 1985. Since that time they have spent every waking moment together in their common devotion to each other and shared passion for the travel associated with the dog show tours, cruise line vacations and Las Vegas excitement. Chip was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Rose Zuercher, who died in 1987 and who was the mother of his three surviving children, Steven Doyle Atkins, Sheri Beaton and Shawn Harms. In addition to his wife, Pat, other survivors include three grandchildren who always affectionately called him ÂPapaÂ; Jessie Rose Atkins, 5, Krystal Lynn Beaton, 18, and Amber Lane Beaton, 14; a daughter-in-law, Christy Atkins; a son-in-law, John Harms; a niece, Doris Smith; and a nephew, Skip Wood. Chip will be remembered as an inspiring leader and loving, gracious man with a wonderful zest for life. |
