Obituary: John Milton Armistead passed away 24, 2010 at age 80. He was born 1, 1929 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was raised in Marshall, Texas where he graduated high school. He graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Chemical Engineering. His entire career was spent with Gulf Oil Corporation, taking him and his family from Port Arthur, Texas to Pittsburgh, PA., then to Tokyo, Japan, Kuwait and finally Houston where he ended his career and retired to Lakeway, Texas. He spent his retirement years boating on Lake Travis, where he became an active member of the Austin Power Squadron. He also spent many years volunteering for the City of Lakeway as City Engineer, working in AARPs Tax Counseling for the elderly program, and was an active member and usher at The Lakeway Church. He enjoyed the last two years as a retiree at Querencia in Barton Creek. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Powell and Mary Johnson Armistead, and his sister, Martha Armistead. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Stephanie Aden Armistead, daughter and son-in-law Jeanie and Bryan Anderson of Longview, TX, daughter Claire Armistead of Kodiak, AK, son and daughter-in-law Walter and Barbara Armistead of Paris, TX, grandson Nicholas Anderson and granddaughter Carmen Anderson of Longview, TX, and several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at The Lakeway Church on 28, 2010 at 10:00am. Memorial Contributions may be made in his honor to a charity of ones choice. Obituary: Jesse Davis Armistead returned to his heavenly home 7, 2014 at the age of 98. Services will be 9, 2014 at 1:30 pm at First United Methodist Church, Lubbock, TX. Viewing will be 8 from 1 to 5 pm in Resthaven . The Family will receive friends from 3 to 5 pm 8 at the residence, 2123 55th St. Visitation will be in the church parlor one hour prior to the service. Entombment following the services will be at Resthaven Memorial Park Mausoleum 5740 W 19th St Lubbock, TX. Davis was born 11, 1915 to David Wilson Armistead and Myrtle Davis Armistead in Tira, TX. He had one younger brother B.W. Armistead. Davis spent his childhood years in Sulphur Springs, TX graduating from Sulphur Springs High School. He received his B.S. degree in education from East Texas State University and Doctor of Optometry from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Both universities recognized Dr. Armistead with a Distinguished Alumnus Award. Davis began his teaching career in public schools at Blum and Itasca, TX. While teaching at Itasca he met a beautiful young teacher named Cora Francis Chappell. He was the girls basketball coach and she was the cheerleader sponsor. were married 10, 1942 in the home of Dr. Waits, President of TCU. Davis always described Cora as his inspiration, helpmate and best friend. were married for 72 years. Davis Armistead proudly served the United States during World War II in the South Pacific as a member of the 5th Air Force, a part of the Army Air Corps attached to the Army Signal Corps. The mission of this unit was to intercept enemy traffic with concentration on Air units. This group became known as the The Codebrakers. Just two weeks ago the United States Air Force awardee Davis the Silver Star and two Bronze Medals. Cora and Davis chose Lubbock as their permanent home in 1948 where he practiced Optometry until his retirement in 1991. Davis is survived by two children, Ann Armistead Thompson married to Robert Dan Thompson III and J. David Armistead Married to Suzanne Weiner Armistead; Grandsons are Robert Dan Thompson IV and wife Rhonda and Jesse Davis Thompson; Noah Richardson is the one great grandson. Other family members who will miss him include his cousin Mrs. Mary Jo Woods and family; sister-in-law Mrs. Bernice Armistead Moore and her children Kay and Alan and nieces Annella and Maude Gene and their families. Family life centered on church and friends. Involvement was the key word when describing Davis life. As a member of First United Methodist Church in Lubbock, Davis served as chairman of every committee, a member of the Rafters School Class, an usher for more than 50 years. Dr. Armistead was involved in both the Texas Optometric and American Optometric Associations., receiving many awards including the Distinguished Service Award the highest award presented by the TOA. The Wall Street Journal (2010), front page, identified him as the Image Maker of Buddy Holly for the dark rimmed glassed DR. Armistead prescribed and prepared for Buddy Holly. Community service included serving as a Regent for the University of Houston (1971-1983) where he helped establish a new building for the of Optometry with the building named in his honor. Local involvement included the Lubbock Rotary Club (past president and governor of District #5730) President of the south Plains Boys Scouts, Past chairman City Board of , Lubbock Goodwill, Board of directors , Lubbock Food Bank, Lubbock Dehydration Plant, Society to Prevent Blindness, Foundation for Education and Research in Vision, United Way, and the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce. Davis was a member of the Yellowhouse Masonic Lodge, Khiva Temple and South Plains Shrine Club. For fun Davis enjoyed managing the family farm/ranch in Hill , travel around the world and politics. Davis was welcomed home by grandson J. Davis Armistead, brother Dr. B.W. Armistead and extended family. The family would like to thank all who have been a part of J. Davis Armistead journey. Obituary: Cora Francis Chappell Armistead returned to her heavenly home 15, 2016, at the age of 99. Services will be , 17, 2016 at 10:00 am, with visitation one hour prior, in the Mausoleum Chapel at Resthaven Memorial Park, 5740 W. 19th Street, Lubbock, Texas. She was born 1, 1916 to Alfred Jefferson Chappell and Mary Maude Holcomb Chappell, in San Antonio, Texas: Cora had two siblings, a brother Alfred Jefferson Chappell Jr. who was eighteen months older than she and a sister two years younger, Maudie Chappell Bell. Following the death of her mother at the age of two, Cora and her brother lived with relatives for four years at Live Oak Ranch in Hall . At age six, Cora and her brother Alfred Jr. were adopted by an aunt and uncle, Rufus and Belle Stanley, where they moved to Hill , two years following their arrival in Hill , Alfred Jefferson Chappell, Jr died at the age of 10 with kidney disease. Cora graduated from Itasca High School at the age of 14, she attended Hill Community where she received her teaching certificate at 16; she received her B.A. in Music from Texas Christian University in 1937. Her teaching career began at age 16 in a one-room schoolhouse located at Pleasant Hill on the Stanley farm. Following graduation from TCU, Cora returned to Itasca to teach in the Itasca School system. It was here where she met a handsome young teacher, J. Davis Armistead. Cora and Davis were married 10, 1942. During World War II, while Davis was in the South Pacific, Cora taught music at Lubbock High and Littlefield High School. Following the return of Davis from the war, Cora taught in Los Angeles while Davis attended optometry school. Upon completion of optometry school, the couple returned to Lubbock, making it their permanent home. Cora was an active member of First United Methodist Church, PEO, PTA and the Auxiliary of the Texas Optometric Association. She ran the home, kept the books for the clinic and raised two children. She was creative, designing and making beautiful clothes and always the best Halloween costumes. Laughter, music, and adventure filled the home. Cora was welcomed home by her beloved husband, J. Davis Armistead; loving parents; brother; sister; adopted family and grandson, Justin Davis Armistead. Her son David Armistead and wife Suzanne; daughter, Ann Thompson and husband Robert Dan Thompson III; grandsons, Jesse Davis Thompson and Robert Dan Thomspson IV and his wife Rhonda and great grandson, Noah Richardson, will miss Cora. Nieces , nephew and extended family have all shared the love of Cora and her life story. Cora was a happy child of God, remembered for her faith, love, strength and beauty. In lieu of customary remembrances, the family suggests donations made in her memory to a charity of your choice. |
