Obituary: Mary Elizabeth McKean Allen (Betty) passed from this life to eternal life peacefully early on morning, May 24, 2015, after receiving extreme unction from her dear friend, Msgr. Shirley. She was 94. Betty was born on 20, 1920, in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. When she was 5 years old the family moved to Mexico City where her father was a Presbyterian minister. She attended Wilson in Pennsylvania and then went on to graduate from The University of Texas in Austin where she met her husband Bill. As a mother, Betty was always looking for ways to encourage her sons to read a lot, to discover new things, to be gentlemen, and to share her love of music. She enthusiastically supported her husbands love of sailing and their time together going to sailing regattas. When her husband bought an airplane, she learned to be his navigator and co-pilot. Bettys love of music started at age 4 and by 9 she played the organ in her fathers church. She was known all over the area for her expertise as she substituted for organists of all different faiths. She was well known for her love of a good story and quick wit. She amazed people half her age with her detailed memory of history and events even until the end of her life. Her upbringing in Mexico endeared her to the Spanish language and culture which lead to her involvement in many organizations that reached women of diverse backgrounds: American Guild of Organists, Church Women United, PEO, Alpha Chi Omega, Parlanchinas, YWCA, Pan American Round Table, Nueces Valley District Dental Auxiliary, Cub Scout Den Mother, Harmony Club, Music Club, Corpus Christi Yacht Club, the choir at Church of the Good Shepherd, St. Francis Guild, the Schola at St. Pius X Church, Mary Bethune Day , and the CC Chamber Music Society and Symphony Guild. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles Robert McKean and Faye McClary McKean; her faithful husband, William M. Allen, DDS; and one great-granddaughter, Caroline Allen. Betty is survived by her two sons, William M. Allen, Jr., M.D., (Frances) of Kerrville, Texas, Charles McKean Allen, DDS (Dawn) of Corpus Christi, Texas; and six grandchildren, Peyton (Debra) Allen of Grapevine, Pamelyn (Michael) Nennmann of Haslet, Jessamyn (Chris) Putman of Fredericksburg, Daryl (Elizabeth) Allen of Houston, Alicia (Andrew) Pearce of Kingwood, Chad (Amy) Allen, DDS of Corpus Christi; great-grandchildren, Kelly, Daniel, Avery, , Liam, Connor, Anson, Ashley, Mackenzie, AnnMarie, Owen, Allison, and Parker. A Memorial Service will honor her life on , 6, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. in the Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal. A reception will follow in the parlor after the internment in the churchs Columbarium. The family would like to thank all the caretakers who have taken such good care of Betty for several years. Special thanks to her long term helper, Norma Braddock, and to Sam Sanchez for her care and comfort during her last months. The family will receive friends 6-8pm, , 6, at the funeral home. She was born 4, 1924 in Terrell to Tobie and Mollie (Taylor) Carroll both of whom preceded her in death along with her husband, Ernest Allen, Jr. and her son, Ernest Allen, III.Mary was a woman who had an innate ability to take care of her family and her home while making sure that her children were taught the ‘right’way to live, the moral choices to make. She ensured that her daughters were educated in behaving in a ladylike way as well as also rearing her son to be a young gentleman. She was a past member of First Baptist of Terrell, Missionary Baptist of Terrell and more recently Emmanuel Baptist and at each church she was very willing to help by teaching School or establishing a ministry for nursing home residents by providing taped church services to those not able to attend. She will be remembered by her family for her distinctive talent for cooking with her specialties being divinity and cornbread dressing. Along with always having a warm and inviting home for her family to come to, she taught them that laughter was a remedy for almost any trial of life. No matter how hard the situation, her advice was to always find the brighter, and funnier side, as you made your way through it.
