Obituary: Harris Terrell Allen Jr., 89, died Sept. 4 at his home in Austin after a long illness. Born in Dallas in 1925, Terrells family moved to Austin where he attended Allan Junior High and Austin High School. He was active in sports and played center on the Austin High state championship football team and was unanimous choice as All-State . He also ran the 440-yard relay on Austin Highs state championship team and led the Austin High basketball team to state finals. The only Maroon that year to letter in three sports, Terrell was chosen as Athlete-of-the-Year for the state by the Austin newspaper. In 2004, he was recognized as a Distinguished Alumni of Austin High School. graduation in 1943, Terrell turned down offers to play college sports and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Following World War II, he enrolled in the University of Texas and played football for the Longhorns. In 1946, George Papa Bear Halas invited Terrell to play for the Chicago Bears, but Terrell chose to remain at UT. Following graduation he worked on then-Congressman Lyndon Johnsons campaign for the U.S. Senate and was later named assistant attorney general under Price Daniel Sr. He embarked on a career in the oil business in West Texas where he met and married the love of his life, Evelyn, in 1956. Returning to politics, he worked on Johnsons senatorial re-election and on LBJs campaign for president in 1960. Terrell worked as an aide to John B. Connally prior to Connallys election as governor. Terrell began a 27-year stint of service to the State, first as a senior examiner of the Regulatory Loan Commission (later renamed the Consumer Credit Commission) and later as assistant director of the Texas Motor Vehicle Commission. Throughout his life, Terrell was an active Christian, serving any way he could from School teacher to mowing lawns. In his retirement, he continued his athletic endeavors in tennis, and the Capital Area Tennis Association selected him Volunteer of the Year in 1987 and 1988. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harris Terrell Allen Sr. and Margaret Allen, and by his siblings, H.K. Allen and Jane Allen Combs. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Evelyn; sisters-in-law Raye Virginia Allen of Temple, Edith Wemple Avery of Austin, Lucille Wemple of Paris, Tex.; brother-in-law Fred Wemple and wife Georgeanne of Odessa; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who turned to him often as surrogate father or grandfather. The family wishes to express its thanks to Pam McClendon and Robert Roebuck for the care they provided to Terrell in his final years. Graveside services are scheduled at 10:00 a.m. on , 9, 2014 at Austin Memorial Park, 2800 Hancock Dr. under the direction of Weed-Corley-Fish . In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a pet related charity or to a charity of choice. |

Obituary: Services for Hallie Thompson Allen, 92, of Lufkin, will be held at 2:00 p.m. , 16, 2016, in the Gipson Chapel, with Glynn Langston and Stacy Cooke officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park. Mrs. Allen was born 27, 1923 in Angelina , Texas, the daughter of the late Emma (Vansau) and Lee Thompson. She passed away , 13, 2016 in a local hospital. Mrs. Allen was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and fishing. She was a very giving person. Her husband served as preacher at Dunn Chapel Church of Christ from 1978 to 1996. He also served at 4th & Groesbeck Church of Christ, Union Road Church of Christ, Bald Hill Church of Christ, Wells Church of Christ and Diboll Church of Christ. Survivors include her daughter, Emily Allen of Lufkin; daughter and son-in-law, Deneice and Jay Winn of Marquez; grandchildren, David Allen Slack, James Thompson Myers, Bradley Foster Slack, Teresa Raynell Smith and husband Kyle, Jayson Michael Winn and wife Dorothy, Matt Winn and wife Katy, and Toby Winn; great-grandchildren, Barrett Gregory Myers, Blaine Thompson Myers, Owen Thompson Smith, Kylee Kathryn Smith, Tyler Winn, and Thomas Winn; sister, Nell Cox of Bald Hill; brother-in-law, Grady Crain of Dover, Arkansas; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other family members. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ray Allen; brother, Boyce Thompson; and sisters, Helen Reynolds and Mildred Crain. Pallbearers will be David Allen Slack, James Thompson Myers, Bradley Foster Slack, Kyle Smith, Barrett Gregory Myers, and Blaine Thompson Myers. Mrs. Allens family wishes to extend special thanks to her caregivers, Sherill Sanford, Patricia Gresham, Lisa Sanford, Tonya Roberts, and Leslie Bosley, for the loving care given to her. Obituary: Gus Mauermann Allen, age 52, returned to his Lord on 18, 2006. He graduated from San Antonio Academy and Texas Military Institute and attended Texas A&M Kingsville. He returned to San Antonio to help run the family floral business, AllenÂs Flowers and Gifts. He has served as President of their wholesale division, Best Wholesale, since 1974. He was a member of Saint LukeÂs Episcopal Church, the San Antonio German Club, The Texas Cavaliers, and the San Antonio Country Club. He was a former member of the SonÂs of the Republic of Texas and the SonÂs of the American Revolution. Gus was a 6th generation Texan with deep family roots in San Antonio. One of his ancestors, Asa Mitchell, fought at the Battle of San Jacinto; His grandfather, Gus B. Mauermann, served as Mayor of San Antonio during World War II. His father, Charles H. Allen served in WWII in the Pacific Theater and thereafter as full Colonel at Fort Sam Houston. Gus was very proud of his Texas and San Antonio heritage. He devoted 17 years to Saint LukeÂs Episcopal Church School, where numerous children have been blessed by his enthusiasm and love. He also served several years as a Cub Scout leader, where the scouts enjoyed his unique wit and humor. His motto with respect to the Scout Manual was, ÂThat doesn mean me! Gus shared his love of the Texas Gulf Coast with friends and family throughout the years. He was devoted, above all, to his family. He is survived by his wife Ann Arneson Allen; his daughter Elizabeth Louise Allen; his son Scott Arneson Allen; his mother Grace Mauermann Allen; his sister Lisa Marie Allen; his mother-in-law Barbara Briggs Arneson; his father- in- law Richard Arneson and wife Canda; his sister-in-law Lynn Arneson; his nephews Matthew and Logan Bewley; his aunts Lenora Mitchell Norton, Julia Annette Hays, Mildred Morton and husband Stanley; and numerous first cousins. He was predeceased by his father Charles Henry Allen. GusÂs outgoing and exuberant personality touched the lives of many and he will be missed. The family wishes to acknowledge its sincere appreciation to Dr. Michael Wooley, Dr. Caroline DeWitt, Dr. Brant Ellis, Dr. Bruce Brockway, Dr. Cindy Johnston and the WellMed staff, Dr. Glenn Halff, and the wonderful team of nurses at the Saint LukeÂs Baptist Hospital ICU.
