Obituary: a long life full of love, Betty Rupley Allen of Lake Jackson, Texas, went to be with Our Lord and Shepherd on 13, 2017 at age 96.
Betty Ruth Rupley was born in Fort Worth Texas 23, 1920 to Ralph Campbell Rupley (age 28) and Mildred Ellen Seele (age 22). Ralph was just home from World War I (Betty was likely a result of that joyous return). Ralph landed a job with his brother-in-law in Fort Worth, selling ladies apparel. Ralph moved the family to Crawford Street in Houston in 1923 in order to open his own fur store (with only five fur coats)! Betty grew up there across Crawford street from James Bates Allen, whom she carried on her tricycle at age 3 (he was the cute 4 year old).
The Allens then moved to La Branch street in Houston in 1926 and by serendipity the Rupleys also moved four months later - again, right across the street. Somewhere about then Betty knew Jim must be the boy for her.
The Rupleys enjoyed summer outings accompanying the Allens to the Allen beach house on the bluff above Trinity Bay. At the bottom of a long trail down the bluff, there was a long pier, shared with the other local houses. Jim had a 12' sailboat there. Betty and Jim and their friends would enjoy sailing on the bays in Jims 12 foot sailboat. Betty spent many happy weekends visiting the Allens at this beach house.
Betty also frequently visited her Seele relatives in San Antonio and New Braunfels.Ralph Rupley had a fur truck for deliveries, and added a mattress in the back for the children to sleep and play on while they drove to San Antonio to visit Grandmother and Granddad Seele and Daddy Grand (Fritz Seele) and cousins Elaine, Claudia and Eve. These visits were very happy times.
Jim and Betty would date occasionally. Jim would borrow his fathers car and take his Betsy out to the end of Main Street for a root beer float. As time passed, Betty would discreetly watch Jim from her window and would cry and lament when she saw him flirt with or date other girls.
Betty was an excellent student and won an essay contest while at San Jacinto High school. She had some notable classmates, including Walter Cronkite and A.J. Foyt, but she stayed committed to her Jim. She graduated high school in 1938 and enrolled in Rice Institute which she attended tuition free while living at home. She majored in Spanish and English and. took Rice field trips to climb pyramids in Mexico. graduation in 1942, she went to work in the office for her father at Ralph Rupley Furs on Main Street.
When Jim was hospitalized and in a coma toward the end of his Army artillery service in World War II, his Betsy would faithfully sit at his bedside awaiting his recovery. Jim did recover and received his honorable discharge. He then re-enrolled at Rice Institute and graduated on 30, 1044 in an express cohort - during which he proposed to his darling Betsy, the love of his life.
Betty was a beautiful bride when they married on 24, 1944 in her parents home. Betty gave Jim his Rice ring as a graduation and wedding present. He always wore it on his left hand.
Their first night of marriage was spent at the Warwick Hotel. Jim arranged it so they snuck up the service elevator to their room so they would avoid their friends and pranksters. The happy couple then continued their honeymoon at the Galvez Hotel on Galveston Island.
Jim and Betty remained married until Jims passing 67 years later. were reunited for eternity this past , 13, 2017 after a short, but long, separation of 4 years and 5 months.
Their first home of married life was in Freeport as Jim landed a job with Stauffer Chemical and they had their first child there in 1947, a beautiful baby girl they named Mildred Janet after Bettys mother and Jims sister. enjoyed crabbing, the beach, visiting with Jims sister Janet and her husband Rodney Schmidt (who was also Jims boss) as well as tooling around in their Model A Ford. As a new mom, Betty was a founder of the Christian Science church in Freeport and a founding member and first full-term president of the Review Club.
Jim was transferred to Houston in 1950 where they lived with Bettys parents on what is now Lakeside Country Club, then known as Pine Lake Farm (which was then 12 miles outside Houston). Shortly after they moved to Glowery Street in Spring Branch and they brought their second child home there in 1954, a bratty little boy named John Robert.
In 1956 Jim was transferred to Mobile AL where they initially lived in a small rent house on Crenshaw Street. By luck, their neighbor was a friendly, wonderful Cajun lady from New Orleans, Margo Gilpin - who was the soloist at Bettys Christian Science church in Mobile and who subsequently functioned as the Mobile Grandmother to her young children since Bettys and Jims parents were 500 miles away in Houston.
In 1959 the family moved across Mobile Bay to a brick home on a large heavily treed lot on Patrician Drive in Spanish Fort Estates. The following years were some of the happiest of Betty and Jims marriage. Jim would leave for work at 5:30am with a brown bag sandwich and sometimes would be gone for days supervising the loading and unloading of sulphuric acid onto barges and tank cars . Betty ran the house and would get the kids off to school and spend the day with housework until they came home, after which she would take Millie across the causeway for piano lessons. She
always had dinner on the table at 5:30 when Jim would usually arrive home from work. nights and s were continued...

Obituary: On , Dec. 4, 2009, Betty Dee Roark Allen, who had just turned 78, took on her angel wings to fly away home to heaven and join her husband, William Thomas "Bill" Allen.
Service: A celebration of Bettys life will be held at 10 a.m. , Dec. 7, at Lamar Baptist Church, with interment following in Moore Memorial Gardens on North Davis Drive in Arlington.
Donna and Brad invite Bettys family and friends to join them for a visitation at Moore , 1219 North Davis Drive, on , Dec. 6, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Memorials: Flowers are welcomed, but donations made in Bettys honor to the Lamar Baptist Church Library, American Lung Association, American Cancer Society or Alzheimers Association would be equally appreciated.
Betty was born Nov. 28, 1931, in Chilton, the sixth daughter of William Thomas Roark and Delia Tarr Roark; she passed away at Horizon Bay Assisted Living in Arlington.
The last surviving of six sisters, Betty joyously joined her loved ones in heaven who preceded her in death: her beloved husband of 58 years, William Thomas "Bill" Allen; her parents, William Thomas Roark and Delia Tarr Roark; sisters, Mary Fergeson, Ruby Rogers, Esther Faye "Sallie" Jones, Emily Ruth "Babe" Prestage and Billie Jean "BJ" Donalson; nephew, Hugh Thomas "Tommy" Clark; and nieces Katherine Sue Prestage Broyles and Glenda Gail Prestage Newcomb.
Betty was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family was her greatest joy. Her children and grandchildren fondly remember her undivided love and attention, her playfulness and involvement in their lives and her support of their dreams, goals and educations. Betty served as a den mother and Brownie leader, and took Donna and Brad to their music lessons and other activities. She also loved her church family at Lamar Baptist Church where she quietly served her Lord Jesus as media librarian for six years. She also helped sew and assemble items in love care packages for battered women. Especially in her later years, Betty suffered with many physical illnesses, but everyone who knew her was inspired by her pleasant and sweet disposition and her strong Christian faith.
A graduate of Gainesville High School in Gainesville, Betty worked at a bakery during her late teens, where she learned the art of cake decorating. Her beautifully decorated cakes were often enjoyed by her family and friends throughout the years. She was also a talented seamstress.
Betty and her husband, Bill, traveled extensively throughout the United States and enjoyed visiting many other countries as well. Favorite trips were to Israel, Greece and Alaska. Betty and Bill spent many years together exploring ghost towns, back roads, and out-of-the-way places of beauty in Colorado. As a family, Betty and Bill took their daughter and son camping in Colorado and seeing sites throughout the United States. Bills retirement, Betty and Bill spent part of each year in Gunnison, Colo., where they especially enjoyed fishing for trout and having friends and family come and share their fun. Betty and Bill also vacationed in the Texas Gulf coast area, where they enjoyed boat trips and catching fish with friends, Dale and Virginia Gallagher.
Until she lost her vision, Betty was an extremely avid reader, and that was one of her favorite hobbies. she lost her vision, she enjoyed listening to "books on tape" from the Arlington Public Library and Texas Commission for the Blind. Until her passing, Betty regularly attended the wheelchair exercise and mind aerobic classes offered at Horizon Bay, where she resided, trying her best to stay as physically and mentally fit as she could. She challenged herself to walk the corridors as often as her health would allow.
Betty enjoyed collecting seashells, music boxes and Native American art.
Betty was a blessing to each person whose life she touched. We will all miss her, but we know she is in heaven and is now happily reunited with her beloved Bill, five sisters and others who were waiting to welcome her .
Survivors: Betty is survived by daughter, Donna Allen Miller, of Arlington; son, Charles Bradley "Brad" Allen and wife, Sonia "Sunny," of Albuquerque, N.M.; granddaughter, Alicia Nicole "Nikki" Allen Jones and husband, Dan, of Waxhaw, N.C.; granddaughter, Jennifer Allen Crotts and husband, Grant, of Charlotte, N.C.; grandson, Shane Ian Frederick of Chandler, Ariz.; and great-grandchildren, Caroline Marie Jones and Nathaniel Lee "Nathan" Jones. Betty was also looking forward to the birth of her third great-grandchild, whose arrival is expected in 2010. Seven nieces and nephews and their families and many cherished and beloved friends at Lamar Baptist Church also survive Betty.
Bettys children, Donna and Brad, express their heartfelt appreciation to these many friends for their love and encouragement, and their comforting cards and visits to Betty, especially during these last months following their dads passing. Donna and Brad also especially want to thank Scott Walton and his associates at BrightStar care, and everyone at Integra Hospice for their compassionate and loving care of Betty and unfaltering support to Donna and Brad. Their thanks are extended to the staff at Horizon Bay as well. The family also extends their gratitude and most especially wants to thank Janet Zamarripa, Pam Spencer, Kimberly Fulton and Diaudra Nemons for their many kindnesses and for their loving and dedicated care of Betty. Bettys family also thanks Edwin Rodriguez, LVN, and Denicia, LVN, for their tender and gentle care of Betty and for helping her to remain calm and comfortable during her final hours.
