Obituary: Lillian Kirby Arrants Lexington, SC \ A graveside service for Lillian Kirby Arrants will be held at 11:00 a.m. on , 6, 2014 at the Lynchburg Presbyterian , Lynchburg Highway, Hwy. 527 near McKnight Road, Lynchburg, SC. The family will greet friends concluding the service. Caughman\Harman of Lexington, SC is handling arrangements. Services will be officiated by the Reverend Irvin Plowden, Jr. of Rock Hill, SC and Mr. Kirby Player of Clemson, SC, nephews of Mrs. Arrants. Mrs. Arrants passed away on 2, 2014 at Still Hopes Episcopal . Mrs. Arrants was born in Williamsburg on 24, 1921 and was the daughter of Hazel Eugene and Marie Davis Kirby. She graduated from Lynchburg High School and attended Winthrop where she studied history and prepared to be a teacher. Upon graduation, she taught school for one year before joining U.S. Navy to contribute to the war effort. training in Massachusetts, she was assigned to a post in communications in Washington, D.C. where she engaged in the difficult task of stripping the codes from Japanese messages. Lillian served the Navy for four years being stationed in Jacksonville, FL after the end of the war. During her tenure she progressed from ensign to full lieutenant. Following her military service she earned a masters degree in political science from the University of Tennessee. She taught courses related to history and political science for nearly ten years and also served as principle in the Aiken school system. Upon the arrival of her daughter Elizabeth Gay (Barton), Lillian focused her energies on family, friends, projects, pets and a lovely home place. Living the remainder of her life in Lexington , Mrs. Arrant served in numerous community service roles assisting in political campaigns, supporting her husband Willard D. (W.D.) Arrants in his insurance business and in later years faithfully serving at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in downtown Columbia. As a parishioner, Lillian served as a docent and was a vital part of the fellowship and kitchen committees serving meals, providing holiday Agape meals and serving dignitaries including the Arch Bishop on one occasion. Though there were difficulties in her life, Lillian made an effort to care for others, perform her Christian and civic duty and faithfully fulfill her roles as friend and family member. She truly was part of the Greatest Generation. Mrs. Arrants was predeceased by her parents and husband, W. D. Arrants. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Gay and Jeff Barton of the home; her sisters, Nelle Kirby Player (Blain, deceased) of Bishopville, SC and Jean Kirby Plowden (Irvin) of Rock Hill, SC and a brother, Davis Kirby of Rock Hill, SC. In-laws, Betty Carver (Carroll, deceased) and Anna Arrants (Charlie, deceased) and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community for their years of care and support and to Palmetto Hospice for their recent services.
