Obituary: Marion Lee Arnett, Sr., U. S. Army (Ret), 89, of Spartanburg, SC, went home to be with the Lord, family and friends on , 20, 2014. Born 17, 1925, in San Buenaventura, CA, Lee was the son of the late Joseph Marion and Hazel Anderson Arnett. Lee came to Spartanburg after serving on a B-24 flight crew as a belly gunner during World War II. He retired as a Major from the U. S. Army after 20 years of active service. During the early years, he flew 25 missions over Europe. Lee worked as an intelligence officer specializing in Japanese affairs when his flying missions ended. He received multiple medals and citations during his military career. proudly serving his country, Lee went to work for the Textile Shops and Synalloy in Spartanburg. Following that position, he became one of the first employees to help start Hercules which later became Hoechst Celanese. While at Hoechst Celanese, he held multiple leadership positions and helped design their product line called Trevira. Because of his leadership contributions to Hoechst Celanese and to South Carolina, Lee was awarded The Order of the Palmetto. Following his retirement from Hoechst Celanese, Lee became an avid golfer, traveler, vegetable gardener and fisherman. Lee was a long time active member of Routh Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served as both Deacon and Elder. In later years, he became a member of First Presbyterian Church where he continued to serve the Lord especially on Mission Teams to the Dominican Republic. Lee is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law: Steven and Patty Arnett of Kauai, HI; Dr. M. Lee and Mary Arnett of Spartanburg, SC; Dr. Robert M. and Pam Arnett of Spartanburg, SC; and Joseph G. and Patricia Arnett of Jacksonville, FL; his sister, Sharon Barber of Placerville, CA; 7 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Lee was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Evelyn Goodwin Arnett in 2002; his brother, Edward L. Arnett in 2000; and his sister, Marjorie Houghton in 2006. The family will receive friends from 9:45-10:45 AM , 24, 2014, in the parlor of First Presbyterian Church, 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302. A celebration honoring his life will follow in the church sanctuary at 11:00 AM, with The Rev. Dr. William L. Arthur and The Rev. Joanne R. Hull officiating. Interment with full military honors by the U. S. Army Honor Guard will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Obituary: Ray Hosley Smith, 90 of Greenville, SC, a retired Field Artillery Colonel, U.S. Army, died 21, 2013 at home. Born in Potter , Pennsylvania, a son of the late Deforest, Sr., and Evlyn Hosley Smith, he was a graduate of Shinglehouse, PA, High School, Class of 1939, and of St. Bonaventure , Class of 1943, with a degree in Physics, and earned a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University in 1949. He served 30 years in the U.S. Army, with combat service in Gen. Patton's Third Army in Europe in 1944-45 and in Vietnam in 1967-68. He graduated from several Army schools, including the National War in Washington, DC, Class of 1966. He commanded two batteries, two battalions, and a brigade, and served two tours on the Army General Staff in the Pentagon. His military decorations include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit with 2 clusters, Bronze Star, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Purple Heart. Since retiring to South Carolina in 1973, he was twice President of the Pendleton Lions Club, twice President of the Piedmont Area Retired Officers Association, and was active in the Republican Party, serving several years as State Executive Committeeman for Anderson . He wrote many letters to the editor on foreign policy or national defense issues and spoke to many civic clubs on such issues. He was a member of Pendleton United Methodist Church for several years and later of North Anderson Baptist Church. Surviving are four daughters: Mrs. Jerry (Patricia) Hardy of Roanoke, VA; Ann Smith of Taylors, SC; Mrs. James (Victoria) Richberg of Anderson, SC; and Mrs. Brion (Susan) Holzberger, of Easley, SC; 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 61 years, Roah Olmstead Smith; brother Deforest Smith, Jr., of Genessee, PA; and sister, Mrs. William (Bonnie) Burch of Hornell, NY. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on , 3, 2013, at North Anderson Baptist Church, 2308 N. Main Street, Anderson, SC 29621. Keller and the late Geraldine Massey Keller Brown. He was a decorated US Army Green Beret. Douglas was a member of the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles. He served in Vietnam and was a past Post Commander of the Mt. Pleasant VFW and a past District Commander. In addition to his wife, Ginny, he is survived by two daughters, Cathy Scooter Keller-Edmands (Stanley), Teri Flipper K. Hanley (Lee); three step-children, James Farley, Jr. (Jennifer), William Farley (Michelle), and Robert Farley; four grandchildren, Ginia Hanley, David DJ Charles Hanley, Jr., Anna Farley, and Reid Farley; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Joanna K. Dotters; half brother, Jimmy Brown; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two siblings, Neannie Crane and Tinkie Stewart.
