Obituary: Carl Strong Anderson died peacefully on May 24, 2015, at the age of 94. He was surrounded by his wife Jean, his four children and two of his grandchildren. He had been in Providence Milwaukie hospital for a few days, struggling with a respiratory virus that led to heart failure. The family wishes to thank the staff of Providence Milwaukie for the excellent and compassionate care they provided to Carl. Carl was born on 10, 1920, in Portland, Oregon, to Arvid Anderson and Amelia J. Anderson (Strong). Both of his parents were immigrants to the United States; Arvid came from a small farming village called Emarp in the Smaland region of Sweden, and Amelia came from Tara Ontario, Canada, also a small farming community. Carl had a beloved older sister, Eleanor Carlson, who predeceased him. He was close to his brother-in-law, Jim Carlson and nephew Arthur Carlson who predeceased him; and his niece, Carolyn Rees. Carl grew up in the Westmoreland neighborhood of Portland, and attended Llewellyn Elementary School. He graduated from Washington High School in 1939. He was always interested in cars, and his first jobs were at a gas station and a car dealership. In 1942 he was drafted into the U.S. Army, to serve in WWII. He was not eligible for combat, due to heart damage from a childhood bout with rheumatic fever, and to being legally blind in one eye. He served as a medical orderly in hospitals in Florida and Texas, caring for wounded servicemen who had been shipped back to the United States. He was honorably discharged in , 1946, and returned to Portland. Apart from his years in the Army, Carl was a lifelong resident of the Portland area. In 1946 he got a job with Pacific Metal Co., starting in the warehouse. Later he became Pacific Metal's bookkeeper and eventually office manager of the Portland branch. He worked 47 years at Pacific Metal, and after his retirement he continued to come in to help out occasionally. Carl met his wife, Jean Shirakow, at Pacific Metal, where she was also employed. married on May 11, 1963, and had just celebrated their 52nd anniversary when Carl was taken ill. raised four children, Suzanne, Donna, Dave and Steve, while living in the Westwood neighborhood of Clackamas . more than 40 years in the same house on Carol Avenue, Carl and Jean moved to woods on the Willamette, an independent living retirement community. enjoyed many friendships and good times in their seven years at woods. Carl loved sports cars, cooking and travel. In the 1950's he was a founding member of Cascade Sports Car Club, and he participated in many rally meets, driving his 1952 MG-TD. Carl was the primary cook in the family and loved to eat good food. His signature dish was Swedish pancakes, thin as a crepe, large as a dinner plate, and rolled up with jam and powdered sugar. Carl and Jean traveled extensively in their retirement years, taking long driving trips around the Southwest, the Southeast, New England and Canada. Carl's favorite destination was the Oregon Coast, which he never tired of visiting. He was an active member of Milwaukie Lutheran church for 50 years, serving on several committees. Carl's primary focus, throughout his life, was his family. He was devoted to his mother, father and sister. His family will always remember him as the best possible husband and father. He was always kind and friendly to everyone he met, and served as a great example to his children and grandchildren. In 1980, Carl suffered a major heart attack and we feared that he would not recover. He defied expectations and was back to work in six months. Everyone in the family is grateful that we were given an additional 35 years with him. Carl is survived by his wife, Jean; his children, Suzanne Anderson (Richard), Donna Webster (Hugh), David Anderson (Judy), and Stephen Anderson (Rene); grandchildren, Chase Hubbard, Nicole Townsend (Michael), Jim Hubbard (Lauren), and Keely Anderson; great-grandchildren Christian and Isabella Townsend. Obituary: Jesus said\ I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. John 11:25 Carl Gilbert Anderson (Andy) Carl (Andy) was born in Sioux City, Iowa on 17, 1918 to the proud parents Emil and Karin Anderson. Emil and Karin were both immigrants from Sweden. Andy was the third of five children. His siblings are Eleanor, Clifford, Margaret and Maurice. The family moved to Oregon and lived in North Portland. Andys mother passed away when he was 11 and his older sister Eleanor dropped out of school to take care of the family. His father Emil ran a shoe repair in North Portland. Andy graduated from Jefferson High School. His best friend in high school, Glen Genovich remained a great friend through out his life. Andy met the love of his life, Sarah Diza Jones Couper from Payette, Idaho when she came to visit her uncle Norman who lived next door to Andy. Andy served in the United States Army during World War II and was deployed to Guadalcanal and New Caledonia. His rank was Sergeant First Class, he worked with munitions and received a medal for Good Conduct. Andy and Diza were married in 1945 when he returned from New Caledonia. Andy was so proud to have been able to serve his country. He loved the United States and often commented on the beauty of the American Flag blowing in the wind. he was discharged from the Army, Andy got a job with J E Hazeltine & Co. by going into the office with a pair of work pants over his arm and telling Mr. Hazeltine that he was looking for a job. Mr. Hazeltine asked: Son, when can you start? Andy replied: Right now Sir, these are my work pants! Mr. Hazeltine hired him on the spot. Andy loved to tell this story to his children and grandchildren. Andy worked in the Hazeltine steel warehouse where he almost lost his foot when a palate of steel fell on it. Luckily he found a surgeon who was able to reconstruct and save his foot. Andy and Diza bought a house in Vancouver, Washington but eventually Andy was promoted to a salesman with J E Hazeltines and took over a sales territory in Eastern Oregon and Idaho. So, in 1947 Andy and Diza moved to Payette, Idaho and for a while they lived with Dizas parents, Merrill and Alice Couper. Andy and Diza had their first daughter, Linda Alice on 22, 1947. eventually bought a house in Payette that was right next door to Dizas brother and his wife, Charles and Bernice Couper. While in Payette, Andy and Diza attended the Payette Presbyterian Church. Andy and Diza moved back to Portland in the early 50s and had their second daughter, Julia Louise. In 1954, Andy got a job as a welding supply salesman with Industrial Air Products. Andy and Diza were active members of Cherry Park Methodist Church. remained in Portland until 1961 when Andy was promoted to the manager of the Industrial Air Products store in Spokane, Washington. lived in Spokane for 2 years and then moved back to the Beaverton area. Industrial Air Products eventually merged with Liquid Air (Air Lquide of France). Andy became the General Sales Manager for the Northwest. Andy and Diza purchased a vacation home at Gleneden Beach, Oregon and eventually moved there after Andy retired from Liquid Air in 1981. Andy loved the beach and liked working with wood, building picnic tables, planters, bird houses and garden decorations. Diza passed away 28, 1988; Andy remained at Gleneden Beach. Andy fell in love again and married Lois Joan Sterling. Andy and Joan continued to live for a while at the Beach and then moved to Timberline Rim near Mt. Hood. Eventually they moved to Dallas Oregon near Joans son Phil Sterling and daughter-in-law Roberta (Bert). Andy and Joan loved being in Dallas near Phil and Bert. The country setting gave them plenty to keep them busy helping with livestock, gardening and even raising chickens. Andy and Joan attended the Baptist Church in Dallas. Due to both Andy and Joans health issues, Andy moved to McLoughlin Place Assisted Living in 2007. He loved his friends and the staff at McLoughlin Place. His second wife, Joan passed away 13, 2009. Andy remained at the McLoughlin Place until his passing. Andy in his younger years loved to fish and bird hunt. He would duck hunt on Sauvie Island with his good friend Glen when he was in High School. He would hunt for pheasants in Eastern Oregon with Dizas relatives near Pendleton. Andy was an excellent marksman and always provided a feast of pheasants for dinner. He fished with his brothers on Sauvie Island. He also would later fish with Diza and the girls in the streams of Idaho, on the Columbia River and in the lakes near Spokane. When fishing with his girls, he spent much of the time patiently untangling their lines. Andy also loved to travel and took his family on many trips to California, Yellowstone, Glacier National Park, the Oregon and Washington Coasts, Eastern Oregon and Idaho. He loved friends and family and gatherings where all could spend time together. Andy also liked to play golf and enjoyed the out doors. Andy always tried his best to eat healthy and stay fit by exercising and walking. He even at times helped lead exercises at the McLoughlin Place. He liked watching boxing and kick boxing on TV. He also liked Dancing with the Stars. He loved to dance in his younger years and this show brought back many memories. Andy loved everyone. He always had a smile on his continued... |
