Obituary: Lawrence (Larry) William Akers died , 15 encompassed by love from family, friends, and care takers. He is survived by daughter Kelly Johnson and her husband Vass, son Chip Akers and his wife Marcie, son Wes Akers and his former wife Julie; grandchildren Eric Johnson and his wife Aly, Alex Johnson, Saige Akers, Izzee Akers, Luke Akers, and great granddaughter Elliot Johnson. Red, as he was known by older family members and friends, was born in Roanoke, Va. where he met the love of his life, Norma (Toodles) Hundley Akers, at a bus stop when he was 19 and she was 15 years old. Soon after, they started dating, and as he liked to say, hey never got over it. were married in 1951, after he returned from a stint in the Navy. spent the first years of their marriage in New York City where he was stationed at Navy Headquarters. Norma persuaded him to use his G.I. benefits, and he enrolled at Virginia Tech in 1955. Two kids and 8 years later he graduated with a Civil Engineering degree in 1963. Larry worked in surveying and mapping for 35 years, which included 12 years with the U.S. Geological Survey, and 23 years with the N.C. Geodetic Survey, where he retired as Chief in 1994. He also served as President of the N.C. Society of Surveyors in 1984 and received an honorary award as Surveyor of the Year from the National Society of Professional Engineers. Although he retired as the oss, he loved being in the field with his employees and crew making maps and surveying land, particularly in the mountains. His ashes and spirit will make their way to the mountains of NC, and also to the Rockies near Banff and Lake Louise in Canada. His beloved Norma passed in 2015, and he relied on his large loving family, his wonderful neighbors in North Hills, friends from Millbrook Baptist Church (where he was a member for 50 years), and his wonderful hospice caretakers to live out his final two years doing what he loved best - walking along the greenways near his house and around his neighborhood talking to friends. North Hills will miss Mr. Larry sitting on his porch and waving to the kids coming home from school. Larry Akers loved his Norma, he loved his family, and he loved people. We will all miss him, but know we will still be surrounded by his spirit, his dry wit, and his unique, courageous, stubborn outlook on life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Transitions Life here in Raleigh. A Memorial Service to Celebrate Larrys life will be , 18, 2017 at 4:00 PM at Millbrook Baptist Church, 1519 E. Millbrook Rd., Raleigh NC 27609. His family will receive friends following the service at the church. |
