Obituary: The Life of Annemarie Lee Ayala Lee was born on 27, 1926 in Frankfurt Am Main (pronounced mine), Germany. She was the only child born to Maria and Phillip Gaussman. She enjoyed the devoted, undivided attention of her mother and her aunt, Anne, for whom she was named and who was like a second mother to her. As a little girl, Lee enjoyed working in the kitchen along side her mother and aunt, as well as sewing, doing needlepoint and knitting by the fire. She had a love for dolls, but due to financial constraints, only had one very special Pupa that she got to take out and play with once a year. Back then, dolls were made of very fine, and very fragile, bone china and if anything had happened to Pupa, there would not have been the money to replace her. As a result, Lee had a love for dolls that lasted far into her adult years, and had quite a collection of dolls that reminded her of her beloved Pupa. Despite many health problems as a child (her first of many surgeries to come was at the tender age of two, for a strangulated appendicitis) Lee was a good student and enjoyed school. She was an accomplished member of the swim team, played tennis and basketball, and learned to speak English fluently. She was in the German equivalent of the 4H Club, and spent many summer vacations on the family farm where she cared for the animals, and even slaughtered some of them. Throughout her life, she never could stand the smell of lamb cooking! Lee also spent time on the familys vineyard where she learned the fine art of wine making, drawing water by hand from a pump and lugging it up hill in oak casks to water the vines. During the winter, she enjoyed skiing and sledding in the nearby mountains and ice skating on the frozen rivers. World War II was very difficult for everyone, and Lees family was no exception. Rationing, curfews, and bombings became the norm. Many family friends were lost, carted off to death camps never to be seen or heard from again. Many afternoon walks found Lee diving for cover in a bomb shelter at the sound of the air raid siren. There were many other atrocities Lee came to witness during those years, some of which haunted her for the rest of her life and some which she was a victim of herself, including her own life-threatening brush with the evil of the Holocaust. She could not speak of them, but neither could she forget them. However, her silver lining in the cloud that was the war was meeting Sammy, her soul mate in every sense of the word. During the war, Lee was in the German Navy. her tour of duty, she worked for the Americans in the Post Exchange on the Army base in Frankfurt. Sammy, an American soldier on his own tour of duty, frequently shopped at the Exchange. Eventually he got the courage to ask Lee out, and the rest, as they say, is history. Sammy and Lee were married in 1949, in the same historic building used for centuries to crown kings and queens. A few years later, Sammy brought his bride home to America. Shortly after arriving in the US, Lee began working as a secretary for an insurance company. Later, she worked for an exclusive clothier and haberdashery, often modeling dresses and ball costumes for the shops well-to-do clientele. In later years, she worked as a volunteer in the office of Holy Family Catholic School, sold Shaklee organic food supplements, became a groomer and breeder of AKC champion toy and miniature Poodles, and owned a ten-unit apartment building with Sammy, managing, cleaning, and maintaining the property themselves, side by side. Lee worked outside the home until 1965, when they adopted a baby girl, Debra. Lee was a devoted mother, and Sammy a doting father. A few years later, a second adoption was started, but due to Lees diagnosis with breast cancer, and the arduous recovery that followed, the plans were abandoned. The close little family (they called themselves We Three) enjoyed camping every summer in Sequoia and Kings Canyon and throughout California. Lee also enjoyed reading, sewing and needlepoint, knitting and crocheting, all of which she shared with Debra, and tending the large family garden with Sammy. Every year Lee canned the fruits of their labor and made some of the best plum kuchen this side of Frankfurt! She enjoyed watching the Winter and Summer Olympics every four years, and was particularly thrilled when the Olympics came to Los Angeles. She also enjoyed watching football with her husband and daughter, not understanding the finer points of the game, but enjoying the end zone celebrations any time a touchdown was scored. Lee could do the Ickey Shuffle as well as Ickey Woods (Cincinatti Bengals, 1988-1991), and thought that William The Fridge Perry (Chicago Bears, 1985) whose mother was near and dear to his heart, was such a nice young man. Lee loved to travel and enjoyed several trips back home to Germany, as well as vacations to Alaska, Hawaii, a cruise to Costa Rica through the Panama Canal, and many, many trips to Las Vegas (affectionately known as lost wages.) Her passion was the one armed bandits, and she was quite successful at holding them up instead of the other way around! Lee and Sammy were blessed with grandchildren starting in 1993 with the birth of their first granddaughter, Celeste Annemarie Starr (named for Lee), followed in 1994 by the birth of Samantha Ayala Starr (named for Sammy). The family was rounded out by the addition of Shannon Lee Starr (named for the girls father, Shane) on St. Patricks Day in 2000. If anything could possibly have topped Lees joy of being a mother, it was the continued... |
