Obituary: While it is possible to receive good counsel from a wide circle of family and friends, few could do it with the honesty and care of Alfred G. Arenas. He had a true talent for bringing out the best in those who sought his help. Alfred was a kind man whose personality was filled with empathy toward everyone he met. He could be quiet and reserved, but his style of communication was authentic and direct. His sensitivity, kindness and generous attitude made him a wonderful friend for all who knew him. From the time he was born on May 20, 1937, Alfred showed a deep concern for others. He was a giving and caring individual, ethical and full of integrity and warmth. His parents were Jesus Arenas and Rosario Gutierrez. Alfred was born in Arizona. He was raised with four sisters three brothers. He had four sisters Enedina, Carmen, Amalia, Oralia and brothers (all deceased) Hector, Alfredito and Doroteo. Alfred was the baby boy of the family. As such he admits that he was a "travieso" and gave his parents and sisters a run for their money. Alfred had a number of interests in his youth. He was an active child. Alfred took part in baseball and football. He played on the High school baseball team, yeah he was kind of a "jock" in the day. He graduated from Edison High School in 1955. He enjoyed some classes more than others, having favorite courses and teachers. His favorite class in high school was physical education (because he played sports). Varsity Baseball MVP 1955. In 1959 Alfred meet the woman that would become the love of his life, his beloved Mary Francis. Mary and Alfred wed on 6, 1960. Along with Mary came 4 girls that Alfred would raise and love as his own. Later to be followed by another daughter and finally a son. Alfred was romantic at times, he would show that side when he would surprise Mary with long stemmed red roses. He was completely devoted to his family. At times working three jobs to support his wife and children. Alfred never complained, he had a job to do and did it. All who knew him would agree that there was a certain kind of magic in how Alfred was able to bond with his children. Alfred was blessed with nine children, two sons Alfred and Kenny; seven daughters, Geraldine(deceased), Patricia, Janet, Denise, Teresa, Amanda and Nicole. were also blessed with nineteen grandchildren, Paul Sharp Jr., Tammy Reyna, Tamera Reyna, Gabrial Reyna, Sandra Ochoa, Rudy Fernandez, Christina Fernandez, Karla Bustos, Eric Silva, Alfred Dwayne Arenas, Jesus Manuel Arenas, Joseph Martin Arenas, Sandra Ochoa, Desmond James Arenas, Amanda Munguia, Pablo Plaza, Frances Nicole Arenas, Camella Soriana. Alfred also enjoyed 16 great grandchildren. Alfred was an Army veteran. He was in the 5th Infantry Division Fort Ord, Fort Bragg, NC. Alfred was honorably discharged just before the Korean Conflict in 1963. Through his hard work and dedication, he achieved the rank of Private First Class. Alfred was decorated parachutist, marksman and sharpshooter. Alfred was proud to show his dedication to the 82nd Airborne. He proudly wore his baseball cap adorned with the insignia. His favorite things in life were spending time with his wife and children (family outings) but without a doubt his favorite was watching Angels baseball. Alfred never missed a televised Angels game if he could help it. His favorite teams were local teams, California Angels and Los Angeles Lakers. Alfred was a man with clear convictions and high principles, and his faith was important to him. He was an inspiration to many people who recognized his sense of commitment and esteem for others. He was a member of Voice of Faith Ministries for 20 years. During that time, he enjoyed listening to Mary sing and he was very proud to sit front row and always had a huge smile on his face for his beloved Mary. Favorite vacations included going to Fresno to visit his family. And spending time with his wife and children no matter where it took him. Alfred was a lover of animals and cherished his pets. His family was rounded out by his Pomeranian dog "Cubby" and his newest friend was a chihuahua named "Oliver". As someone who treasured harmony and quiet, Alfred accepted retirement and made the most of it. That day finally came in 1994, and Alfred was well prepared. In retirement, he found new pleasure in spending time with his wife and making new friends at the senior center near his home. Though he could be a private person at times, Alfred was always able and willing to give of himself. Alfred carried with him an almost mystical sense of life. He was a person who was happy most of the time, always ready to make you smile. He had a whimsical sense of humor and was ready to tell a joke at a moments notice. Alfred G. Arenas shared himself freely and family and friends will remember Alfred for the strength of his convictions. The "knock Out Kid" that will never be forgotten. |
