Obituary: Mercedes Casarez Arambula, 82, passed away 14, 2014. She was born in Los Angeles, California on 23, 1932. She was one of eight children born to Angel Casarez and Otilia Martinez Casarez. Mercedes, or better known to her siblings as Mercy, was educated in Delano schools. She married Tom R. Arambula in 1950, whom preceded her in death. were married for 50 years. Shortly after they were married, they moved to Blythe, CA where she became a Cafeteria Manager for the Palo Verde Unified School District. It was here where she became aware of the high poverty rate in the community in which she worked. As a result, she began the very first breakfast program in her school for students before they became more prevalent in school districts across the nation. Mercedes also believed strongly in education and was an advocate for minority students and students with special needs and limited English children. She would speak up for them when they were being unfairly treated or were misunderstood by students and/or adults. In 1968, Mercedes and her family moved back to the Bakersfield area. When she became a grandmother and her grandchildren began school, she volunteered on a consistent basis at their school. She volunteered so much so that the principal of the school told her that she might as well get paid for her time. Shortly after, Mercy was hired as a Teacher's Assistant with the Bakersfield City School District. She was a very talented and gifted Teacher's Aide and had such wonderful gifts working with children. She encouraged and motivated those who had little faith in themselves to continue achieving their goals. Mercy retired in 2005 after 33 years of service. Mercy came from humble beginnings and honored others by treating them with respect and dignity. She was an extremely generous person and always extended a helping hand to those in need. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great great grandmother who loved her family deeply. She touched and enriched the lives of her family; she will be missed immensely. Mercedes is survived by her children, Rita Arambula Verde (Francisco), Nora Arambula Gonzalez, and Tomas Arambula (Jaime); grandchildren Isabel Gonzalez, Vivian Gonzalez, Juan Tomas Gonzalez, Elisha Wilkerson (Michael), Rosalinda Verde, and Gabriel Verde; great grandchildren, Dominique Martinez (Jessica), Cheyenne Martinez, Gianna and Ethan Aguirre, Aneesa and Tomas Ochoa, Tomas Daniel and Evie Arambula, Izreal Gonzalez, great-great granddaughter Annalise Martinez, sisters Lillian Uriaz, Mary Ellen Mata and Lupe Rangel; brother in law Louie Arambula, nephews Andrew J. Espinoza, Matthew and Paul Arambula, and an extended family of Casarez' and Arambulas. Visitation will be held at Delano Mortuary-Dignity Memorial at 707 Browning Rd. Delano, CA 93215 on , 19, 2014 from 4-8pm; and the rosary service at 6pm. The funeral service will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church 1015 Clinton St., Delano, CA 93215 on , 20, 2014 at 9:00am. Obituary: Gilbert David Arambula, 83, passed away 19, 2014. He was born in Delano, California on 29, 1930. Gilbert was one of four children born to Louie "Luz" Arambula and Virgina Ramirez Arambula. He was also known to his family and friends as "Cussie". Gilbert enlisted in the navy during the Korean Conflict in 1950 and served as an E5 Petty Officer Second Class on a Landing Ship, Tank (LST). LSTs were naval ships specially designed to transport and deploy troops, vehicles, and supplies onto foreign shores for the conduct of military operations. He saw action which earned him a naval decoration. He was honorably discharged on 8, 1954 and later that year joined the National Guard, K & 185th Infantry. He was honorably discharged from the National Guard in 1957. He attended Palo Verde in Blythe, CA and then went on to barber college. Gilbert returned to Delano, CA and served as a barber until his retirement. Gilbert is well known for his contributions as a cheerleader during his high school years at Delano High School. He entertained many people during half time shows in football and basketball with his incredible dance moves especially the jitterbug! Gilbert is survived by his brother Louie Arambula, nephews Andrew J. Espinoza, Matthew & Paul Arambula, nieces Nora Arambula Gonzalez, Rita Arambula Verde, and by a large extended family of Arambulas. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Tom, sister Beatrice "Coto" Espinoza, brother in law John H. Espinoza and sister in law Rachael Arambula (Louie). The following services will be held at Delano Mortuary-Dignity Memorial at 707 Browning Rd. Delano, CA 93215 on , 28, 2014: Viewing 9-10AM; Rosary - 10AM; services - 11AM.
