Obituary: Willies Biography His cares are now all ended. - William Shakespeare Introduction William H. Antrim was a man of simple means, who would prefer that a fuss not be made over him. Willie, as he was commonly referred to, was a modest man, who considered himself part of the working class, who liked to play as hard as he worked. He drank, he fished, and he bet on the horses, and lived life to the fullest. With his wit and charisma, he could charm just about anyone. Always the prankster, he loved to tease, like his Lee Pop Antrim (Gramps) and his father, Wayne. Background/Growing Up Born 19th, 1931, at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana weighing in at a healthy twelve pounds, he was truly a big bundle of joy. Growing up, the mentors he looked to were largely within his family. Relatives such as his Uncle Kenny and Grandma Pearl taught him lessons in the life that he would carry with him forever; values, such as knowing right from wrong, showing respect for his elders, and demonstrating kindness to all and skills such as writing, reading, and storytelling. As a child William was extremely curious. When he was about four or five years of age he wanted see what would happen if he cut an electric cord with a pair of scissors. He succeeded in severing the cord, putting a hole in the scissors, and got the shock of his life. His love of learning began early in his childhood. As one with a curious mind he loved to engage in games where he had to out think his opponent, such as chess or checkers. Both of his parents engaged in these intellectual challenges, encouraging William to use his mind. By the age of six, William and his Mother (Grandma Solles) moved to Wisconsin. She would soon remarry and reestablish a family life. His Mother gave him ten Brothers and Sisters: Lillian, Edward, Bobbie, Elizabeth, Shirley, Donnie, Linda, Larry, Diana, and Jimmy. His Father gave him six Brothers and Sisters: Joann, Donald, Jerry, Earl, Linda, and Vearl. All of his fathers children are deceased except Earl and Vearl. William served as the role model for his siblings. His mother would constantly tell his brothers and sisters, o be more like Billy. Activities as a Child William loved to be outdoors. In the wintertime, he would enjoy ice skating, snow sledding, and ski jumping. He would go fishing in the summer and he would bow hunt during the fall. His dear childhood friends that would engage with him in these activities were Joe Dodie Purdem, Chuck Raymond, and Art Kettle. Married Life William met Amelia Marie Buttery, in 1952. Within a few months the two were happily wed, at the county courthouse in Liberty, Indiana by a justice of the peace on 25, 1952. had two children, a son, Matthew Nile Antrim, born 1952 and a daughter Cassandra Jean Antrim, born 1955. Matthew and his wife Ann had a son and daughter, Jennifer and Johnathan. Cassandra and her husband Jeff have three sons, Jeffrey, Scott, and David. Jennifer and her husband Jason are the parents of one boy and four girls, Shane, Miranda, Jacinda, Abbigail, and Maddi-Lynn. Johnathan and his wife Sylvia have a daughter, Isabelle. Military Life William entered the military on 17th, 1951. He joined the ranks of the Army and signed on with the 11th Airborne Division as a paratrooper, where he trained at Fort Benning, Georgia. William was called upon to aid in the Korean Conflict. He was deployed in 1953, and he worked on the front line of the battlefield where he maintained communications. William remained overseas in Korea for a year, returning to the states in 1954, and he was eventually discharged 3rd, 1955. er While in Indiana and having returned from his military obligation, he took up work with his father and grandfather trimming trees for Union Electric. He next took on a job working for the state, doing road maintenance. Around this time, Amelias father and her Uncle Ted taught William how to trap for fur and how to gather and cultivate ginseng root. These skills would prove useful and were at times essential in providing for his family. In 1963, William and his family ventured off to California where they bought a home in the city of Azusa. He found employment at a local filling station so he could continue to provide for his family. William continued to find steady employment and eventually found his way to Santa Anita Racetrack, where he worked as a Lead Industrial Engineer for fifteen years, where he eventually retired in 1996. Retirement and Hobbies William loved to pile the grandkids in the car and head to the local fishing spot, to either Puddingstone or the Santa Fe Dam. When they got back he would fix his famous French fries. He loved singing to his grandchildren; a favorite was Theres a Hole in the middle of the Sea In his spare time, William enjoyed shooting pool, where in some circles he was known as a shark. In fact he acquired so many trophies in pool tournaments that he was unable to display even a fraction of them. He boasted of his ability as a handicapper when it came to picking the right horses. He studied the racing form the night before race day and he would have all his picks mapped out. Up until his last days of life he would call Keith to take him to the track; he was his gambling buddy as well as a best friend. In a wheel chair and on oxygen William made a final rendezvous to the San Manuel Casino in 2008. William really enjoyed watching continued... |
