Obituary: Marie Ah Tye passed away peacefully in her sleep on 18, 2014. Marie was born in Walnut Grove, California on May 12, 1915. The Lee family was large, consisting of 13 children. Marie spent her childhood in Walnut Grove and graduated from high school in the nearby town of Courtland. She moved to Stockton in search of work and there met, through their mutual love of dancing, Dilly Ah Tye, Jr. married in 1935. Dilly, like Marie, was a member of a large family and times were difficult in the late ‘20s and early '30s. To support the large Ah Tye family, Dilly and four of his brothers founded the Ah Tye Brothers Garage and Service Station, a well-known and respected Stockton institution for over 50 years. Marie and Dilly were blessed with daughters Sonia in 1935 and Cynthia in 1938. With the advent of World War II, Dilly served in the U.S. Army. While Dilly and his brothers were in the service, Marie and other Ah Tye wives operated the garage to keep the business going. Marie's job was pumping gas and keeping the books. When daughters Sonia and Cynthia were in 6th & 8th grades, Marie worked as a cashier in Lodi and later worked at Delta . Marie had many interests. She enjoyed trout fishing, poker, dancing, and swimming. She was an accomplished cook and baker, developing a great reputation for her delicious chiffon cake and fried chicken. Marie also took classes in tai chi, and swam regularly up into her late 80's. Dilly retired in 1996, giving them time to enjoy travel and many other activities. By 2004, they realized that it was time to move out of their home of 50 years and into a situation without the difficulties of managing and maintaining a home. Following an extensive search of the area, Marie and Dilly settled on the very beautiful Commons on Thornton, which was then under construction. became the first residents to live at The Commons. Dilly passed away peacefully in 2006 with Marie, by then his wife of 71 years, at his side. Of the original Lee family of 13 children, 6 of her siblings are still living. It’s remarkable for a person who recently celebrated her 99th birthday. Marie is survived by daughters Sonia (husband Larry Chun, now deceased) and Cynthia (husband Larry Templeton). Both had children, so Marie could count five grandchildren: Lisa Tsuruoka, Michael Chun, Darrell Chun, Russell Kao and David Kao. She also had eight great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Those who knew Marie knew that she had a ready laugh, an easy smile, a great sense of humor, and a generous spirit. It was always that way. |

Obituary: MRS. SYLVIA SUE AHRENS was married to the love of her life, Merlyn J. Ahrens, for 47 years and is survived by her six children, Greg Ahrens (Joan), Sue OConnor (Dan), Marty Ahrens, Jeffrey Ahrens, Nancy Devine (Tom) and Wes Ahrens (Lisa) . Her sister Linda Chaffers (Mike), fourteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Sylvia was preceded by her husband Merlyn, sister Sherri Crow, and great grandson Jacob Ahrens. Sylvia delighted in having her family surround her and enjoyed family vacations, family reunions, the Chargers and Padres. She freely and unconditionally opened her home and her heart to family, friends, and those in need. Grandma took her family to the beach, boogie boarding, fishing, camping, movies, and trips to Vegas. She was a Tough Old Crow. Sylvia helped establish the family construction business and maintained payroll for over 25 years. She was a construction mother to all the employees. She actively participated in PTA for 20 years, serving at the local and state level, and also volunteered at Little League and Alvarado Convalescent . In lieu of flowers please make donations to Sharp Hospice. |
