Obituary: Columbus, GA.Lucy W. Abell, 86 of Columbus, GA passed away 4, 2017, surrounded by her family, under the loving care of Columbus Hospice. The family will welcome guests for visitation , 8, 2017 10:00- 11:00am in Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby, 4071 Macon Rd. Columbus, GA. Services will begin at 11:00 am. Interment will be at Parkhill with Reverend David Howle officiating. Mrs. Abell was born 24, 1930 in Richland, GA to her late parents James and Minnie Harry Watson. The youngest of thirteen siblings, Lucy learned the love of a large family. She was passionate about her family and loved family gatherings, watching the Braves and the Georgia Bull Dawgs, and just sitting quietly watching the birds. Along with her parents, Mrs. Abell is preceded in death by her loving husband Robert Abell, Jr.; eight brothers and three sisters; son-in-law Joe Hilderbrand. Those left to cherish her memory are: her sister, Madge Phillips of Jacksonville, FL; three daughters, Janet (Jerry) Sanders of Columbus, Cindy (Steve) Smith of Dayton, TN, and Suzanne Jones of Columbus; grandchildren, Justin (Angie) Smith, Jonathan Sanders, Ben Hilderbrand, Ashley (Colton) McClendon, Alexis (Fred) Hughes, and Brent Smith; great grandchildren, James and Mac Smith, and Ryder, Tanner and Emma Hughes; nieces, nephews, other family members, and special friend, Geneva Fortson. Obituary: Imogene Holcomb Abell, 90, Columbus, died on 17, 2016. A celebration of life service will be held at Edgewood Hall of Striffler- Hamby, Columbus on 19, 2016 with Dr. Frank Parr and Rev. J. Grantham officiating. A burial will follow at 4 p.m., Harmony in Richland, GA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Imogene was born in Oakwood, GA, to the late Posey Lipscomb Holcomb and Martha Owen Holcomb. She attended Georgia State for Women and Mercer University to earn her certification to teach elementary school. Imogene taught in the public schools in Fort Valley, Preston, and Richland, GA, and retired from the Muscogee School District after teaching at Brown Avenue and Wynnton Elementary Schools. She was active in Wynnton United Methodist Church, serving in leadership positions in the Cofer/Friendship School class, the Altar Guild, and the United Methodist Women (Night Owls/Morning Doves), where she received the Quiet Disciple Award and served as the President of the District UMW. In the community, she was active in the Mohina Garden Club, where she served in several leadership roles, and Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Organization for Women Educators. Imogene enjoyed giving of her time to help others through the Wynnton Neighborhood Network and visiting shut-ins and patients in hospitals and nursing homes. She also enjoyed working in her yard, making divinity and other treats for family and friends, participating in Bible study groups, and spending time with her grandchildren. Imogene was preceded in death by her husband William Joseph Abell, Jr., her sisters Nelle Holcomb, Margaret Holcomb and Mildred Holcomb, her brothers Lipscomb Holcomb and J.H. Holcomb, her mother- and father-in-law, Louise Chambless Abell and William J. Abell, Sr., and brother-in-law Harry Abell. Survivors include her sons, William Joseph Joe Abell, III (Susan) of Watkinsville, GA, and Jock Holcomb Abell (Pam) of Columbus, GA, daughter Martha Louise Abell of Statesboro, GA, grandchildren Emilie Abell, Thomas Abell, Amy Abell, William Abell, and Joseph Abell, brother Rev. William Bill Holcomb of Georgetown, TX, sister-in-law Betty Jean Abell of Fitzgerald, GA, and many nieces and nephews. Members of the Cofer/ Friendship class, Morning Doves, and Mohina Garden Club will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family would like to thank the many caregivers that assisted Imogene, in particular Florence Annette Taylor, for their dedicated service over the last few years as well as the many church members who visited her.
