Obituary: Thomas H. Tommy Atkins was born May 29, 1931, in Skellytown, Texas, was raised in the nearby town of Borger, and he passed away , 22, 2007, at the age of 76. As a child of the Great Depression, resourcefulness and determination became two of his most enduring traits. Obituary: STEPHEN E. ATKINS, academic librarian/historian

Dr. Atkins died 26, 2010, at his home in Station, Texas after a lengthy battle with colon cancer. A memorial service will be held , May 8, 2010, at 2PM at the Memorial Chapel, 2901 Texas Avenue S. in Station. Visitation will be on , May 7, 2010 at 7 PM at the Memorial Chapel.

Dr. Atkins was born on 29, 1941 in Columbia, Missouri. His father was a heating and air-conditioning superintendent, and his mother was an office worker. As a youth, he traveled extensively attending 13 schools in 12 years in Texas and South Carolina before graduating from high school in Mexico, Missouri. His B.A with Honors and M.A. with Honors in European history was from the University of Missouri. He started work on a Ph.D. in French History at the University of Iowa, but the Vietnam War intervened. Dr. Atkins spent two years in the U.S. Army, ten months of which was in South Vietnam with C, 6th Battalion, 31st Infantry and later with the 19th Military History Detachment. His stay in Vietnam is described in his most recent book Writing the War, published just six weeks before his death. serving his two years in the military, Dr. Atkins returned to the University of Iowa, earning his Ph.D. in French History in 1976. Due to a tight job market and unable to find a teaching position, he worked at the University of Iowa library. Later he attended the University of Iowa Library Science School part-time and earned his M.A. in Library Science in 1983. His first position was as a Political Science Subject Specialist at the University of Illinois Library. six years there and obtaining tenure, he became Head of Collection Development at Texas A&M Libraries in 1989. Dr. Atkins held this position for fifteen years. During that time, he helped double the size of the collection and turned the library from essentially an undergraduate library to a research library. Ill-health caused Dr. Atkins to step down as Head of Collection Development and become the Curator of the Dawson Collection and French studies at the Cushing Library. Over the course of Dr. Atkins career, he wrote ten books and numerous articles. Two of the most recent were The 9/11 Encyclopedia and Holocaust Denial as an International Movement. He also taught French History courses and a course on his academic specialty in extremism and terrorism. His increasing ill-health prevented him from the traveling to foreign countries which he loved to do.

Dr. Atkins is survived by his wife, Susan J. Atkins of Station, a daughter, Stephanie S. Atkins of St. Louis, Missouri, a son, Jordan E. Atkins, daughter-in-law, Anna Palumbo and a grandson, Samuel E. Atkins, of Chicago, Illinois.

The family would like to thank all the physicians and staff at Scott and White Clinic in Station and Temple for their dedicated service during Dr. Atkins illness. Obituary: Patricia Pat Atkins born 10, 1926 died , May 4, 2010 in San Antonio. She was the middle one of three talented daughters born to the late Ruth and Jack Flaherty of San Antonio, Texas. She attended Ursuline Academy, in San Antonio, from the primer through high school. Among her fondest school year memories were, at age 13, winning the city-wide essay contest with her essay on What American Means To Me. Another memory of which she was very proud was being chosen as a sponsor for Central Catholic High School., marching with the boys of the Blue Battalion in 1942 and 1943. She was president of her class during her high school years, achieving the highest grade average and receiving the scholarship into what was then Incarnate Word . Pats sisters, Lemoyne and Joyce Flaherty were professional singers. However, singing was not Pats forte. It was he dance – especially ballroom dancing which she enjoyed. During the war years, Pat joined the Liberty Belles, a government sponsored program of young ladies who entertained our servicemen at dances held at the various army bases and USOs. She also participated in skits produced for the servicemens entertainment. She volunteered her services with the U.S. Signal Corps, tracking air traffic in the State of Texas. She married Ernest Broggi, Jr. in 1949 and, after 10 years, they were blessed with a son, Jack Stephen Broggi, whom Pat dearly loved and was there for her throughout her life. This marriage ended in divorce in 1975, after which time Pat entered the business world employed by the prestigious law firm of Brock, Bingham & Person, as legal secretary to one of the partners, her dear friend, David Person. In 1985 she retired from the law firm to marry Chip Atkins, whom she had known as a good friend from the late 1950s. Chip and Pat had so much in common to share – one was their love of dancing which they enjoyed often on the many cruises and other travels on which they embarked – and another was their hobby and interest in the Collie breed of dogs. Under the kennel name of Lode-Ark, they bred many champions. Chip was a licensed Collie judge and they traveled throughout the U.S. as far as Hawaii when Chip was invited to judge. On many of these assignments Pat was asked to judge the Sweepstakes. Chip and Pat had a very happy, fun-filled marriage for 17 years, at which time she lost her knight in shining armor due to complications from cancer. In her earlier years, Pat volunteered her services through several agencies for the betterment of needy childrens health. She was a member of the Beta Tau Zeta Sorority, the Holy Family Guild, the Sultanas de Bejar, and a charter member of the Bel Meade Garden Club. Her gardening skills and her love of a beautiful yard were evident in the landscaping of her homes. She was a member of the Collie Club of America, secretary of the Quarter Century Collie Group and the San Antonio Collie Club. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Lemoyne Flaherty Menger and husband, Albert and her niece Barbara Menger. She is survived by her son, Jack Stephen Broggi, her sister, Joyce Flaherty Trusdel, her granddaughter Jennifer Baughmen Jeffrey and three great-grandchildren, Lauryn, Katelyn, and Jeffrey. She is also survived by her nieces, Ruth Menger OHiggins, Lemoyne Menger, and Suzanne Trusdel Tracey, who she was very close to during their growing-up years. She is also survived by several great nieces and nephews. Pat is also survived by her step-son, Steve Atkins and his wife, and daughter, Christy and Jessie Rose, as well as her step-daughters, Shawn Harms John and Sheri Weiters Charles and their daughters, Krystal and Amber. Pat leaves behind some very special friends, her sister-in-law, Juliette Broggi, Shirley and John DiBattista, Dr. William Brokken and his wife, Doris, Leslie and Don Jeszewski, Catherine Boggess, and Deborah Frederick, who was of great help and support during Pats sickness. Visitation will be on , May 10, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Porter Loring on McCullough. ROSARY
