Obituary: Angelo Athas was born in Dallas, Texas, 4, 1925; his parents were Pete S. & Aglaia Dinos Athas; Angelo passed away 2, 2012 in a Mesquite, Texas, hospital. He was preceded in death by wife Anastasie Z. Athas May 4, 1993 & his brothers, Sam Athas, Nick Athas and Bill Athas. Angelo competed ten years in the Golden Age Games for the Blind & Disabled Veterans, bringing home gold, silver & bronze medals every year in a variety of events, including javelin and discus throw. He was a 3rd degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. He loved his Catholic Faith, his family, dancing & dominoes. During WWII, he was in the European Theatre participating in the Battle of the Bulge, receiving numerous awards including 3 Bronze Medals & a Purple Heart; spending over 30 years at the U.S. Post Office, Angelo retired in 1980, & took up personnel management for M-12, a styling products company, for 12 years. He sold R.V.O.S Insurance & was an active member of SPJST, KJT, & WFLA Czech Fraternal Organizations. Survivors are daughter Sherri Williams, son-in-law Kim of Mesquite, grandchildren Jeremy Williams & Tanya Williams with great-granddaughter Athena of Plano, and Angela Williams of Plano; sons Thomas Athas, daughter-in-law Linda, granddaughter Rachel of Grapevine, Paul Athas & Jennifer Harris, grandsons Nathan & Austin of Dallas, John Athas, daughter-in-law RoseMarie, grandchildren Vincent , Sophie, Luke, Chloe, Joseph, Mary, Elizabeth and Veronica Athas of Garland; two sisters Catheryne Angel & Angeline Psalidas. Obituary: Beatrice Athanas, 90, passed away peacefully on , Sept. 6, 2010, at her residence following a short battle with cancer. Trisagion service will be held at 7 p.m. , Sept. 9, 2010, in Johnsons chapel. service will be held at 10 a.m. , Sept. 10, 2010, at The Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church with Father Jim Hademenos officiating. Interment will follow at Fairmount . Pallbearers will be George Kalaitzes, Peter Kouvelis, Tommy Corbell, Jim Terry, Michael Norton and Sgt. Leslie Renken. Honorary pallbearers Laura Monette, Shawna Pena and Alexis Norton, great-nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Katharine Athanas; and her sister, Joann Chakos. Bea was born in Temple, Texas, on Oct. 25, 1919. She grew up in Temple, Sweetwater and San Angelo, Texas. She attended San Angelo Public Schools graduating in 1936. In 1941, Bea joined the U.S. Womens Army Corps. She was a member of the first WAAC class to attend Officers Candidate School in Des Moines, Iowa. As first lt. in the Quartermaster Corps, she was stationed in California, Georgia and Oregon. She finished her Army career in Daytona Beach, Fla. Upon her discharge, she was awarded the rank of captain. Bea was the first WAAC to step foot on Goodfellow Air Force Base. Upon her discharge from the Army, she returned to San Angelo and became a bookkeeper for J.M. Lea Wool Warehouse until Mr. Leas retirement. At that time, she went to work for Producers Livestock Auction for 18 years before starting her own bookkeeping service. Bea loved to travel. Other than trips by automobile around the Southwest, she and her sister, Mary, traveled to Hawaii, Alaska, Germany and Canada. She also traveled to Greece with her parents and her niece, Beverly. Miss Athanas is survived by her sister, Mary A. Spencer; her brother-in-law, Alex Chakos; two nieces, Beverly Renken and Pamela Medlin; and one nephew, George Spencer. She is also survived by many great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Hospice of San Angelo and Mrs. Hilda Ruiz, Mrs. Inez Benilla, Jennifer Arreosola and Brenda Martin. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, Hospice of San Angelo or the American Cancer Society . She was loved not only by her family but by scores of others who came to know her. Bea had a big heart and an innate gentleness of spirit. No one could top her bookkeeping skills as she was a perfectionist in that area. Before her illness, you never saw her that her hair was not in place, her nails polished and her clothes, shoes and handbag all matched. And Emily Post had nothing on Beatrice Athanas.
